Knut Hamsun and Nazism
ATLE KITTANG
It is not difficult to understand why Knut Hamsum was one of the Norwegian courts’ biggest headaches in 1945. Beside Ibsen, Hamsun had made Norway’s greatest contribution to world literature; how could the cultural honour of the nation be rescued from the shame of a treason conviction? The authorities resorted to a judicial observation process that concluded that the old man had suffered from «permanently_impaired_mental_faculties»"permanently impaired mental faculties" during the occupation, and that for this reason he should not be made made legally responsible for his actions according to Section 86 of the Penal Code. On the basis of the Treason Edict of December 1944, however, a liability case was opened regarding Hamsun’s membership of the "Nasjonal Samling"«Nasjonal_Samling» Party (NS). This confirmed a verdict of guilt, after an appeal to the Court of Appeal. Ever since, the question of Knut Hamsun’s Nazi leanings has traumatized Norwegian culture and society. Hamsun shook up the special Norwegian myth of the Great Poet, which had developed historically in parallel with the creation of the modern Norwegian nation. Wergeland and Bjørnson had also helped to build up an image of the poet as the herald of Norwegian independence and Norway’s national identity, and when Bjørnson died Knut Hamsun more or less enthusiastically adopted this role. The fact that he so clearly failed his country at the time of its greatest need may have helped to give the myth a blow that all "good Norwegians"«good_Norwegians» could only regard as an attack on the very cultural identity of the nation. This brought out a much more disturbing picture of the artist in conflict with society, a situation that has been much more difficult to take on board.

Hamsun, Knut,
pseudonym of KNUT PEDERSON (b. Aug. 4, 1859, Lom, Nor.d. Feb. 19, 1952, near Grimstad), Norwegian novelist, dramatist, poet, and winner of the Nobel Prize (1920). A leader of the Neo-Romantic revolt at the turn of the century, he rescued the novel from a tendency toward excessive naturalism. His first publication was the novel Sult Hunger , 1899), the story of a starving young writer in Norway. Sult marked a clear departure from the social realism of the typical Norwegian novel of the period. Its refreshing viewpoint and impulsive, lyrical style had an electrifying effect on European writers. Hamsun followed his first success with a series of lectures attacking such idols as Ibsen and Tolstoy, and he produced a flow of works that continued until his death. Like the asocial heroes of his early works e.g. Mysterier Mysteries, Pan (1894), and Victoria (1898)Hamsun either was indifferent to or took an irreverent view of progress. In a work of his mature style, Growth of the Soil , 1920), he expresses a back-to-nature philosophy. But his message of fierce individualism, influenced by Nietzsche and Strindberg, remains constant. Consistent to the end in his antipathy to modern Western culture, Hamsun supported the Germans during their occupation of Norway in World War II. After the war he was imprisoned as a traitor, but charges against him were dropped in view of his age.

Jump to: navigation search Previous (Knowledge management) Next (Knut Wicksell) Knut Hamsun (31 years old) in 1890 Knut Hamsun (August 4, 1859 – February 19, 1952) was a leading Norwegian author and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature for 1920. His most famous novel, Hunger , describes the experiences of a poor but proud intellectual who is modeled on Rodion Raskolnikov, the hero of Fyodor Dostoevsky 's Crime and Punishment . Following Dostoevsky, Hamsun was a key transitional figure between nineteenth century realism and the subjectivism of modern prose, such as the irrational world of Franz Kafka . He was noted for his insistence that the intricacies of the human mind ought to be the main object of modern literature. Many modernists embraced the modern, urban culture, but Hamsun shows it to be a terrifying place, devoid of the certainties and securities of pre-modern life. He showed the darker, irrational side of "human progress" at a time when its virtues were largely trumpeted by other modern artists.

Das Ende des Romans: Victoria schreibt an Johannes
Knut Hamsun

Victoria.
