Customer Reviews: A very touching book My son brought this home from his school library and was extremely touched by this book. He is quite a sensitive child and when it comes to anyone or anything getting hurt he feels it. I initially thought he didn't want the book but I misread his reaction. I thought he was upset and didn't like the book. But, he kept saying "Order it off the internet, daddy". The page where Woogie gets chased by the boys with the BB gun has to be the most heart-wrenching page, next to where he goes missing but eventually shows up. And HOPEFULLY becomes an indoor cat!! From an engine fan, tumble dryer and boys with BB guns poor Woogie uses up his nine lives but this cat has 10!

I believe those so-called 'womanly' traits are traits of the warrior. Vulnerability is one, you know. The word, warrior, it applies to women just as well. I don't see it as exclusive to a male society. Male and female traits are within each human, anyway. I've known some of the greatest warriors in my life. They've stood up in the face of danger, in the face of hopelessness. They've been bravenot in the national headlines, but they've been true to themselves, and who they are, and to their families. Their act of bravery could have been to feed their children, to more than survive. — From an interview with Helen Jaskoski
      Biography / Criticism
The love of language that Harjo possesses comes from her father's grandfather who was a full-blood Creek Baptist minister and her mother who composed songs that could translate heartache. Other important influences include Leslie Silko , Simon Ortiz, Galway Kinnell, and Leo Remero. She attended class with Leslie Silko and Galway Kinnell which inspired her to become a poet and use the beauty of words to her advantage. Since that time, Joy has released six major books containing her powerful works of poetry.

At sunrise each morning, the sound of rhythmic slapping awakens me. Beyond the open window lies the nameless lake—mirroring huts and laundry—where bed linens are struck across the water until they are thought to be clean. A prayerful singing accompanies the work, rising from the voices of invisible washer-women. When I close my eyes
    even now,
    I can hear this singing.

Hensci. Feeling homesick about now. I’d like to get back for Green Corn. It’s expensive to go anywhere. Airfares from Hawaii have doubled since last year. Gas prices are outrageous. Someone’s getting rich. “I’ll pay for a tank of gas”, I told my daughter when she headed to Tempe to take my granddaughter for an ASU Indian student orientation a few weeks ago. I got the bill. It was almost two hundred dollars for one fill-up. Her vehicle has to hold five kids, the two step-grandkids she’s taking care of, and her husband. Cars are being made that run on air. Why not political hot air? There’s always plenty of that blowing around.
I’m down here in San Diego for the Autry Native Voices Playwrights Retreat with three other playwrights, Diane Glancy (Cherokee), Laura Shamas (Chickasaw) and Julie Little Thunder, another Creek. The playwrights chosen in the competition this year happened to be all women. Little Thunder’s play is The Girl Who Was Captured by Ghosts, about a Cheyenne woman dealing with breast cancer. The story is powerful and evocative. We are being given support to develop our stories through the assistance of a wonderful program for native theater built by Randy Reinholtz (Choctaw) and Jean Bruce Scott. We will do a reading of our plays in Los Angeles at the Wells Fargo Theater.

Intense This collect of Native American poetry is excellent. Joy Harjo relates her experience in a way that is accessable and meaningful. Mrs. Harjo is a poet that needs to be read and read again to explore her depth. We discussed several of her poems in a Great Books book club.

Harjo next turned to painting, following in the footsteps of her great aunt. She studied art as a boarding student at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she also attended readings by Native American poets such as Leslie Marmon Silko and Simon Ortiz. She had a son, Phil, while a student there. Harjo continued to pursue painting as an undergraduate student at the University of New Mexico (UNM), where she also studied the Navajo language. In her senior year, inspired in part by a reading by poet Galway Kinnell, she shifted her focus to creative writing. Launched Career
