    THE CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER
Simon Shea, a retired professor of English at a small Minnesota college, has begun to forget things and is making dangerous errors in living. Thinking he needs to be cared for more closely, he commits himself to a private rest home, and opens a world of the strange, delightful, frightening, and comic, as he attempts to recover from his mistake. Customer Reviews: this is a great writer. my first jon hassler read, simon's night is a great piece of fiction. a novel that caused me to buy everything i could find with this author's name on it. no pretension here, no postmodern posturing, just a wonderful old-fashion novel with interesting real-life characters brought vividly forth by a master. mr hassler should be as famous as anne tyler or john updike, he creates a complete fictional world that is a treat to look into. my highest recommendations.

Finding balance between the ridiculous and sublime: A talk with Jon Hassler
Interview by Alden Mudge How is it that the author of the very funny new novel, "The Dean's List," is not yet a famous American writer? True, Jon Hassler enjoys a devoted word-of-mouth following. The soulful "Staggerford" (published, at last, in 1977, when he was 42 years old) is, Hassler admits, "a cult book among English teachers, at least around Minnesota." His seven subsequent novels are recommended by knowledgeable librarians and thoughtful booksellers all over the country. His most recent book, "Rookery Blues" received high praise. And Hassler counts First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton as one of his more famous fans. But Hassler's name sparks no flicker of recognition in the eyes of most of my well-read friends, and I wonder how that can be.

F-H Fairbanks, Evelyn. The Days Of Rondo . St. Paul: Minnesota Historical Society Press, 1990. Summary: The story of St. Paul's Rondo District's Evelyn Fairbanks, from her birth in the 1920's to her adulthood in the 1940's. It is a story that tells what it was like to live and grow up in a black community in Minnesota during that time period. While telling her life, the book also tells about the lives of the others in Evelyn's life, and those that surround her in Rondo. For Whom It's Appropriate? 8th to 12th grade students Teach It or Circulate It? The book is written in a very easy to follow style, which makes it pretty much a quick read. The subject matter is not to hard or challenging, and so I would recommend this book to be circulated with only a little follow up discussion for grades 9 and up. With the 8th graders, I would include a little more historical discussion with the teacher. Dense Questions: Looking at Evelyn's childhood in the 30's, how does it differ or resemble your's and your neighborhood's? Why do you think Evelyn wanted to take the job at her brother's prison, knowing all that she knew about it, and if you were put in the same position, would you have done the same? At the end of the book Evelyn tells about her old neighborhood's destruction. What feelings do you think went through her mind about it, and what would your feelings be if the same thing happened to your neighborhood? Thematically Related Literature: Hoops -Walter Dean Myers

    Childhood Memories
Memorable Catholic Characters ... Knowing How to Tell a Story ON A COLD MAINE NIGHT, a 35-year-old news producer sits alone in his quiet apartment reading a book his sister has recommended. Suddenly, stunned by the book's unanticipated climax, he shouts, "No! No!" Moments later he returns to the story, overwhelmed by a sense of loss. A civilian writer for the Department of Defense scours bookstore shelves, searching out the perfect gift for a friend's upcoming birthday. The title she seeks is set firmly in her mind. Unable to find it, she exits the Maryland store in frustration. No other book will do! A parish priest assigned to a lonely South Dakota outpost eagerly anticipates an upcoming day off. It finally arrives. He drives 85 miles one way to the closest public library and picks up another novel by his new favorite author. In the anonymity of the small city, he kicks up his heels and spends the afternoon in a coffee shop reading.
