Hauptmann, Gerhart
Hauptmann, Gerhart
Geb. 15.11.1862 in Ober-Salzbrunn/ Schlesien; gest. 6.6.1946 in Agnetendorf/Schlesien

    From LoveToKnow 1911
GERHART HAUPTMANN (1862-), German dramatist, was born on the 15th of November 1862 at Obersalzbrunn in Silesia , the son of an hotel-keeper. From the village school of his native place he passed to the Realschule in Breslau , and was then sent to learn agriculture on his uncle's farm at Jauer . Having, however, no taste for country life, he soon returned to Breslau and entered the art school, intending to become a sculptor. He then studied at Jena , and spent the greater part of the years 1883 and 1884 in Italy . In May 1885 Hauptmann married and settled in Berlin , and, devoting himself henceforth entirely to literary work, soon attained a great reputation as one of the chief representatives of the modern drama. In 1891 he retired to Schreiberhau in Silesia. Hauptmann's first drama, Vor Sonnenaufgang (1889) inaugurated the realistic movement in modern German literature ; it was followed by Das Friedenslest Einsame Menschen (1891) and Die Weber (1892), a powerful drama depicting the rising of the Silesian weavers in 1844. Of Hauptmann's subsequent work mention may be made of the comedies Kollege Crampton Der Biberpelz (1893) and Der rote Hahn (Igor), a "

    Biography of the German dramatist.

    GERHART HAUPTMANN
    Born, Obersalsbrunn, Silesia, 1862
    Died, Agnetendorf, Germany, 1946
This document was originally published in Minute History of the Drama
GERHART HAUPTMANN'S first play, BEFORE SUNRISE , was produced in 1889 at the German Free Theater, and was acknowledged as the beginning of an important new literary movement for Germany just as Strindberg 's MASTER OLAF had been recognized as the beginning of Swedish literary independence. Hauptmann's dramatic genius is incontestable, but he has never seemed able to settle on any one form as best suited to express his dramatic intentions. THE WEAVERS , for example, a play that caused considerable stir on its presentation in 1892, is most unusual in that it is concerned with a whole community and has neither hero nor heroine. THE SUNKEN BELL , on the other hand, is centered around one man's struggle for expression. In MICHAEL KRAMER it is two men who hold the center of interest. Gerhart Hauptmann's father was a Silesian innkeeper and the boy was originally intended for a farmer. His instincts, however, were artistic rather than agricultural. After two years of study in a school of art, a year of more general education at the University of Jena, and considerable continental travel, he settled down in Rome as a sculptor. Regard for health soon brought him back to the more bracing climate of Germany, and there, after some hesitation, he gave up art for a literary career. At the time Hauptmann's BEFORE SUNRISE appeared, cultivated Germans had apparently forgotten the greatness of Germany's own

Gerhart (Johann Robert) Hauptmann (1862-1946) Prominent German dramatist of the early 20th century. Hauptmann won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1912. His early naturalistic plays are still frequently performed. Hauptmann's best-known works include The Weavers (1893), a humanist drama of a rebellion against the mechanisms of the Industrial Revolution, and Hannele (1884), about the conflict between reality and fantasy. ENGELSGESANG
    durch Finsternisse getrageb;

    die Zinnen der ewigen Stadt.
In Berlin Hauptmann came in contact with progressive intellectuals, among them the poet and dramatist Arno Holz (1863-1929), whose play Neue Gleise (1892) deeply influenced him. Holz had earlier published Die Kunst, ihr Wesen und ihre Gesetze (1891), in which he tried to give naturalism a theoretic base. VOR SONNENAUFGANG (1889), Hauptmann's his first play, with its shocking realism, created an uproar among the audience when it was first performed in Freie Bühne in Berlin. In the play, Alfred Loth, a young socialist, falls in love with Helene Krause, the sister-in-law of his former college friend, a ruthless coal-mining engineer, and is corrupted by his power. Alfred leaves Helene, who kills herself. "He is not a realist who sporadically suffers from whimsical fits of philosophical romanticizing", wrote Theodor Fontane later, "but a realist in good style, which is to say that from the beginning to the end he is always the same."

    Award Ceremony Speech
Presentation Speech by Hans Hildebrand, Acting Secretary of the Swedish Academy , on December 10, 1912 There is an old saying that times change and men change with them. If we look back on past ages we discover its truth. We, who are no longer young, have had the opportunity in our bustling lives to experience the truth of the saying, and every day confirms it anew. As far back as history extends we find that new things emerged, but were not at first recognized although they were to be important in the future. A seed came alive and grew to magnificent size. Certain names in contemporary science illustrate the discrepancy between modest beginnings and later developments.
The same is true of dramatic poetry. This is not the place to trace its development through twenty-five centuries. There is a tremendous difference, however, between the satyr choruses of the Dionysiac festivals, called tragedies because of the goat skins worn by the chorus, and the demands the modern age makes on dramatic poetry, and this difference indicates considerable progress.
