POEMS BY HEINRICH HEINE: "The comfort of coming to a man of genius, who finds in verse his freest and most perfect expression, whose voyage over the deep of poetry destiny makes smooth! The magic of Heine's poetical form is incomparable; he employs this form with the most exquisite lightness and ease, and yet it has at the same time the inborn fulness, pathos, and old-world charm of all true forms of popular poetry. Thus in Heine's poetry, too, one perpetually blends the impression of French modernism and clearness with that of German sentiment and fulness." MATTHEW ARNOLD RELATED LINKS

Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) - original name: Harry Heine; in full Christian Johann Heinrich Heine German poet of Jewish origin, whose lyrics have inspired such composers as Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Schumann. Heinrich Heine lived at a time of major social and political changes: the French Revolution (1789-99) and the Napoleonic wars deeply influenced thinking. Heine died in Paris, where he had lived from 1831 as one of the central figures of the literary scene. One of Heine's most famous poems is 'Die Lorelei', set to music by Silcher in 1837. It has become one of the most popular of German songs. "I do not know what haunts me,
What saddened my mind all day;
An age-old tale confounds me,
A spell I cannot allay."

(from 'Lorelay') "You're so lovely as a flower,
So pure and fair to see;
I look at you, and sadness Comes stealing over me.
(from 'Du Bist Wie eine Blume', written for Therese Heine)

ANTAŬPAROLO
POR LA UNUA ELDONO
Tre mi konscias la malfacilaĵojn, verki Esperantajn poemojn kaj precipe, reprodukti tiajn delikatajn poeziajn sentojn, kiajn postlasis al ni Heinrich Heine. Nur profunda amo al la poeto kaj perfekta kompreno pri lia karaktero iom sukcesigus tian taskon. Pro tio sole samlingvano povus kuraĝi, traduke prezenti al alilandanoj karakterizajn partojn el tia poezio. Tamen traduko restas traduko. Kelkafoje lia doloro pro ĉiam denove spertitaj maliluzioj naskas ja akrajn, sarkasmajn sonojn: Min malofte vi komprenis
