The First 100 Years...
The Next 100 Years
Over that weekend, a grand event was held in Heinlein's home town of Kansas City, Missouri. You'll find a fairly complete wrap-up of the event in the Kansas City 2007
Into the Second Century
The Centennial wrapped up the first century of Robert Heinlein's life and legacies in grand style. However, for every aspect of that event that was an ending, another aspect was a beginning. Those of us who planned and staged the Centennial event deeply believe that our brief blaze of light was a marker between major eras in the ongoing history of Heinlein's legacy, and that for all the wonders and delight of the first hundred years, the best is yet to come. For a time, we thought that the Heinlein Centennial organization itself would be a carrier of that fire into the future. For one reason and another, though, we've found it best to let this organization retire from the scene, resting securely on its laurels and years of hard work, and let others take up the effort

50. A Robert A. Heinlein Biography -- Carlos Angelo
Extensive biography of Robert A. Heinlein by Carlos Angelo, translated from Portuguese.
http://www.wegrokit.com/caa.htm
Carlos Angelo Double Star in '56; Starship Troopers in '60; Stranger in a Strange Land in '62 and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress in '67. He was the first to be chosen as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America, in 1975. Astounding Science Fiction , for which he earned seventy dollars. From then on, he wrote and published stories in large quantity, which caused him to have to adopt pseudonyms in order to prevent two stories from the "same" author being published in the same edition of a magazine. His pseudonyms were Anson McDonald, Lyle Monroe, Caleb Saunders, John Riverside and Simon York (this last was for a detective story). "Future History" as it was later known), which lent them even more verisimilitude by making them part of a fictional universe already known to his readers. He managed to make the future appear as believable as the present. Podkayne of Mars (1962) shows us a Venus colonized principally by Brazilians, a planet of capitalism carried to its extreme, where, in order to get anything, one has to grease a lot of palms. That is not to say that Heinlein took a jaundiced view of Brazil; indeed, he saw Brazil's future as a rosy one. As he noted in Tramp Royale (1954, published posthumously in 1992), Heinlein admired Brazil, believing it to have the same vigor, resources and pioneer spirit that had made his mother country a superpower; he predicted that Brazil would dominate the 21st century as thoroughly as the United States dominated the 20th. Heinlein visited Brazil in 1953, on one of his four voyages around the world and, later, in 1969, at the invitation of the Brazilian government.

Robert A(nson) Heinlein (1907-1988) Prolific American writer, one of the grand masters of science fiction with Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke . Heinlein produced during his career fifty novels and collections of short stories. Heinlein admired highly motivated men of action - like Howard Hawks in his movies - and attacked religious hypocrisy and corporate power games. His later works, in which his right-wing views mixed with fast-moving stories and fascination with with the paranormal, earned him the reputation of being a militarist, even a "fascist". However, a number of his book gained cult status among members of the counterculture. "Furthermore, although a flaming liberal during the war, Heinlein became a rock-ribbed far-right conservative immediately afterward. This happened at just the time he changed wives from a liberal woman, Leslyn, to a rock-ribbed far-right conservative woman, Virginia... I used to brood about it in puzzlement (of course, I never would have dreamed of asking Heinlein - I'm sure he would have refused to answer, and would have done so with the uttermost hostility), and I did come to one conclusion. I would never marry anyone who did not generally agree with my political, social, and philosophical view of life." (from I, Asimov: A Memoir

He spent one year at the University of Missouri before he entered the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, from which he graduated as the 20th best among the 243 cadets. He spent five years in the Pacific Ocean until he had to retire because of tuberculosis in 1934. He also married his first wife, Leslyn McDonald.
His first story "Lifeline" was written as an entry for a magazine contest offering $50 for the best sf story by a new writer, but he sold it instead for $70 to the magazine "Astounding Stories" where it was published in August 1939. During WWII he worked as a research engineer for the navy in Philadelphia but he also wrote 25 novels and short stories. He also met his second wife Virginia Gerstenfeld whom he married in 1948. Not much is known about his personal life. He once said that he wrote seven days a week, six months a year. The other six months he traveled or was lazy. At the end of the 1960s his health became weaker and he had to undergo several treatments. His health improved after a major operation in 1982 but his novel, "To Sail Beyond the Sunset," published in 1987, became his last.
