  • ASIN: Book Description Customer Reviews: A Must In order to fully understand the postmodern world, the subversive industry of autobiograpy, the collision between poetry and prose, the influence of hybridity, and the potential of revision any reader of contemporary poetry needs to begin here. The writing is complex without being hermetic. Difficult without being resistant. My Life is a necessary text. Generous in its insights, its complicated declarations. This is a perfect marriage of philosophy, poetry, and mathematics. Read this always and often. A classic The structure of this book with 45 poems of 45 sentences, one for each year of Hejinian's life, makes the reading of the book like a scale miniature (5 minutes to 1 year) life. It makes you think about your own life and about the relative duration of life events. I read this book right after my first kid was born and I was continually thinking about the possible effect of this event on my life through time. The book's stucture also allows Hejinian the freedom to stretch out without losing the reader. If you get lost on one poem, you are right back on track for the next one.

    Roughly Stapled
An interview with Lyn Hejinian by Craig Dworkin, originally published in Idiom #3 (Berkeley: 1995). LH: It was very big. When I first started corresponding with Ron Silliman and Barrett Watten in the early 70's, Ron sent me David Melnick's Pcoet and in the accompanying letter mentioned Velimir Khlebnikov. That was the first I'd heard of Khlebnikov, but Ron was writing in a way that assumed I understood, and so I had to find out. Likewise, Barrett was talking about Viktor Shklovsky and the Russian Formalists very early on. By that time several of Shklovsky's books had been translated, and Victor Erlich's big book called Russian Formalism had been published, which we all read and talked about and which had an enormous impact. Erlich's book is still, I think, the most thorough and provocative of the many works about the Russian Formalist movement, but Shklovsky had the direct influence on our sense of literary style and strategies. Barrett's early work Plasma/Paralleles/"X" was very much influenced by Shklovsky.

HOW RUSSIAN IS IT: LYN HEJINIAN'S OXOTA
by MARJORIE PERLOFF You will start with the third chapter, Arkadii said, and the first sentence must be attributed to Emmanuel Kant as follows: everything happens so often, that speaking of it makes no sense.
    Oxota
Arkadii, in the above passage, is Arkadii Dragomoschenko, the remarkable Russian poet Lyn Hejinian has been translating for the past decade or so, a poet she first met in 1983 when she accompanied her husband Larry Ochs and other members of the Rova Saxophone Quartet on a tour to Moscow and Leningrad. Few poetic journeys of our time have proved to be more fruitful. Dragomoschenko and Hejinian have collaborated on a film script, a theater piece, poems, and translations of each others' work; they also organized, in 1989, an international conference on avant-garde writers, the first such conference since the Russian Revolution. The four American poets who attendedMichael Davidson, Ron Silliman, Barrett Watten, and Hejinian herselfwrote a collaborative account of their trip called Leningrad (Mercury House, 1991), in which their four alternating voices run together, the individual poets "distinguished only by the icons used as a visual key to identify them: a formal element of the text as poem." The result makes for a fascinating collage travel-narrative, tracking as it does the rapid unravelling of the Soviet Union, as seen from a set of related, but quite different positions.

    16. Eight Justifications For Canonizing My Life
Article by Lisa Samuels on Lyn Hejinians My Life .
    http://epc.buffalo.edu/authors/samuels/mylife.html
Eight justifications for canonizing Lyn Hejinian's My Life
In the past few years, the second edition of My Life because this is the story of a languaged self, a written "I," rather than the autobiography of an experiencing human.) Why is My Life taught, apparently as an exemplar of contemporary experimental poetry, in so many American colleges and high schools? More considerably, why might it be perceived to be worthy , a palatable "postmodern" work? This second version of the question is perhaps preferable, since Hejinian's work is hardly a national bestseller: reprinted for the sixth time in 1996, it had sold at that point something over 8,000 copies. Still, such a figure makes it considerably more successful than most other non-mainstream poetic writings. The abundant attention to My Life in small prestigious journals like Temblor , and brief mention in a number of critical books, joins increasing comment in more mainstream academic journals: Contemporary Literature has had two articles on the work in the last four years, and American Literature recently published one. Increased mass gains gravity, of course, but critical attention to Hejinian's book is not simply a function of previous attention. This book accesses a number of categories for pleasure and familiarity, both literary and cultural.
