Admiration
A dmiration is a very short-lived passion that immediately decays upon growing familiar with its object, unless it be still fed with fresh discoveries, and kept alive by a new perpetual succession of miracles rising up to its view.
Authority
N o oppression is so heavy or lasting as that which is inflicted by the perversion and exorbitance of legal authority.

Censure

Consequences
T here is not any present moment that is unconnected with some future one. The life of every man is a continued chain of incidents, each link of which hangs upon the former. The transition from cause to effect, from event to event, is often carried on by secret steps, which our foresight cannot divine, and our sagacity is unable to trace. Evil may at some future period bring forth good; and good may bring forth evil, both equally unexpected.

Book Review
There was a time when reading Joseph Heller's classic satire on the murderous insanity of war was nothing less than a rite of passage. Echoes of Yossarian, the wise-ass bombardier who was too smart to die but not smart enough to find a way out of his predicament, could be heard throughout the counterculture. As a result, it's impossible not to consider Catch-22 to be something of a period piece. But 40 years on, the novel's undiminished strength is its looking-glass logic. Again and again, Heller's characters demonstrate that what is commonly held to be good, is bad; what is sensible, is nonsense. Yossarian says, "You're talking about winning the war, and I am talking about winning the war and keeping alive."

He was jogging four miles at a clip these days, working on his novel God Knows, coping with the complications of an unpleasant divorce, and pigging out once or twice a week on Chinese food with cronies like Mel Brooks, Mario Puzo, and his buddy of more than twenty years, Speed Vogel. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search For other people named similarly, see Priestley (disambiguation) Priestley by Ellen Sharples Joseph Priestley (13 March 1733 Old Style – 6 February 1804) was an 18th-century English theologian Dissenting clergyman natural philosopher , educator, and political theorist who published over 150 works. He is usually credited with the discovery of oxygen , having isolated it in its gaseous state, although Carl Wilhelm Scheele and Antoine Lavoisier also have a claim to the discovery. During his lifetime, Priestley's considerable scientific reputation rested on his invention of soda water , his writings on electricity , and his discovery of several "airs" (gases), the most famous being what Priestley dubbed "dephlogisticated air" (oxygen). However, Priestley's determination to defend phlogiston theory and to reject what would become the Chemical Revolution eventually left him isolated within the scientific community. Priestley's science was integral to his theology, and he consistently tried to fuse Enlightenment rationalism with Christian theism.

Description
Hailed as "one of the important books of our generation" by the Chicago Sun-Times, this hilarious story of middle-aged English professor Dr. Bruce Gold and his encounter with White House politics takes readers into the heart of the Jewish experience in contemporary America.
Customer Reviews
Only some of this gold shines This book was a bit of a mixed bag for me. It is strongest in those parts where it most resembles Catch-22. Heller is extremely good at emphasizing the absurdity of bureaucracy, in any form. In this book he manages to take on politicians, higher education and big money, high society, all to great effect. The dialog in these portions of the book is a roller coaster of parody and cynicsm that "boggles the mind", to borrow a catch phrase from the book. This is Heller at his best. However, the portions of the book that deal with Gold's family and personal life left me disappointed. While Heller seems to be trying to take aim as family dysfunction, I just couldn't bring myself to care enough for these characters to really connect with any of the family strife. While there were moments of dialog that showed spark, most of the portions delving into Gold's personal life simply felt flat and monontonous, and slowed the entire pace of the book down.

Study Guides and Essays by Joseph Heller Catch-22 Joseph Heller Joseph Heller, born on May 1, 1923, grew up in Brooklyn, New York. From an early age, he aspired to be a writer. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a bombardier in Italy and flew 60 missions. These experiences later became the basis for his first novel, Catch-22 . When he was discharged from the Air Force in 1945, he pursued a degree in English at New York University. Heller earned an M.A. from Columbia University in 1949 and studied at the University of Oxford as a Fulbright Scholar for the next two years. He became a professor of English at Pennsylvania State University (1950-1952) and instructed the feminist playwright Wendy Wasserstein. His later jobs included working as an advertising copywriter for Time (1952-1956) and Look (1956-1958) as well as a promotion manager for McCall's In 1961, Heller published Catch-22 , which tells the story of Captain Joseph Yossarian and his attempt to avoid serving in World War II by feigning insanity. Yossarian’s plan is thwarted by the doctor's argument that if he were truly mad then he would endanger his life and seek to fight more missions. On the other hand, if he were sane, he would be capable of following orders, in which case he would be sent to fight more missions. Thus the phrase "catch-22" has come to mean something like "a proviso that trips one up no matter which way one turns." The novel was an immediate success despite a very acrid review by the
