Hilarious and horrifying, this tale of Yoyo Yossarian, a WW II Air Force bombardier stationed on an island off the coast of Italy, is a cruelly funny satire of the military. Yossarian has flown over 50 combat missions and desperately wants to quit before he is killed. Major Cathcart, who constantly increases the number of missions flown by his men to glorify himself and his command, is a loudmouthed loud·mouth

Prophet Joseph Smith
Joseph Smith, Jr., often referred to as the Prophet Joseph Smith, was the founding prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph Smith: A Modern Witness of Christ
In 1820, young Joseph Smith prayed to know which church he should join. In answer to his prayer, God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him. Through him they restored the truth about the plan of God. Joseph Smith was a prophet and a powerful witness of Christ. Visions of Joseph Smith
The Prophet Joseph Smith had his first vision at the age of fourteen while praying in a grove of trees in western New York (see First Vision ). This was the first of a series of visions Joseph Smith received, many of which were shared with other persons. Teachings of Joseph Smith
The revelations to Joseph Smith are clear, direct, and unequivocal, yet his teachings are difficult to characterize or summarize, since they do not fit easily into traditional theological categories, and they always presuppose that more can, and probably will, be revealed by God.

GOD KNOWS why I read this book
Written: Jan 24 '00
Product Rating: Pros: Ummm... I'll get back to you on that...
Cons: Boring, You already know the story, Attempts to "Spice it Up" were distracting
magenta321's Full Review: Heller, Joseph I read the book God Knows by Joseph Heller because I needed to find a book which was written by a contemporary American author, dealing with a biblical tradition for a research seminar I was involved in. The story is one you are familiar with: the rise and fall of David, dealing with his political and familial life. The reader already knows the plot and what the final outcome is from the time they pick up the book, if they are familiar with Samual I and II.
Heller could not merely rewrite the bible, and his readers are already familiar with the story line, so how does he make it uniquely his own?

The novel, set during the later stages of World War II from 1944 onwards, is frequently cited as one of the great literary works of the twentieth century. It has a distinctive non-chronological style where events are described from different characters' points of view and out of sequence so that the time line develops along with the plot. The novel follows Yossarian , a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier , and a number of other characters. Most events occur while the Airmen of the fictional 256th squadron are based on the island of Pianosa , in the Mediterranean Sea west of Italy.

Heller, Joseph
(b . May 1, 1923, Brooklyn, N.Y., U.S.), American writer whose novel Catch (1961) was one of the most significant works of protest literature to appear after World War II. The satirical novel was both a critical and a popular success, and a film version appeared in 1970. Heller flew 60 combat missions as a bombardier with the U.S. Air Force in Europe. He received an M.A. at Columbia University in 1949 and was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Oxford (1949-50). He taught English at Pennsylvania State University (1950-52) and worked as an advertising copywriter for the magazines Time (1952-56) and Look (1956-58) and as promotion manager for McCall's (1958-61), meanwhile writing Catch-22 in his spare time. The plot of the novel centres on the antihero Captain John Yossarian, stationed at an airstrip on a Mediterranean island in World War II, and portrays his desperate attempts to stay alive. The "catch" in Catch-22 involves a mysterious Air Force regulation, which asserts that a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions; but, if he makes the necessary formal request to be relieved of such missions, the very act of making the request proves that he is sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved. The term Catch-22 thereafter entered the English language as a reference to a proviso that trips one up no matter which way one turns. His later novels including Something Happened
