Franz Joseph Haydn
Born of staunch Catholic parents at Rohrau Austria , 1 April, 1732; died at Gumpendorf Vienna , 31 May, 1809. He began his great musical career in the choir-school of St. Stephen's Vienna . For nine years he was a chorister there, and yielded his place as solo-boy to his younger brother Michael when the inevitable signs of change appeared in his voice. During these years he manifested an extraordinary passion for music, availing himself of every opportunity to improve his knowledge of the art. He was enabled to pursue his musical studies. At this time he came under the influence of Emanuel Bach, Dittersdorf, and Porpora , who may be said to have been his principal masters, although the credit of his remarkable achievements must be given rather to his own incessant industry than to any particular instruction. The year 1756 found Haydn so well informed in the various branches of his art that he began to be ranked among the first music-masters of Vienna . In 1759 he accepted the appointment of vice-capellmeister to Count Morzin, a

The Eternal Student
The Symphonies of Anton Joseph Bruckner (1824-1896)
Unlike most great masters, Anton Bruckner developed his skills slowly. Indeed, had his life been as brief as Mozart's, Bruckner would be an obscure composer with a total of six relatively immature compositions to his credit (four Masses and two Requiems). Though born to peasants, Bruckner came to music early in life. His mother and father were both involved in local music activities in Ansfelden, near Linz, in Upper Austria. Bruckner received lessons in the violin from his father at the age of four, and took his first formal schooling in music theory at the age of eleven. During this time he became acquainted with Mozart's mass and Haydn's oratorios. There is some indication that his first attempts at composition date from this period, but none of these pieces survive. At the age of 13 Bruckner was compelled to forego further formal studies in music and composition by the death of his father and the subsequent financial problems of his family. Accordingly, he gained a position as a chorister in the local monastery where he continued to teach himself theory and had his first exposure to organ composition. In 1840, when his voice broke, he demonstrated his lack of self-confidence by deciding to follow his father's example and become a teacher rather than pursue composition as a vocation. In order to complete his courses in teacher training, he was required to travel to nearby Linz where he encountered the concert music of Weber and Beethoven. The following year he took his first post as a schoolmaster in the little village of Windhaag.

99. COMETA MAGICO - MAGIC AND FANTASY
A short history.
http://www.cometamagico.com.ar/dunninger2.htm
JOSEPH DUNNIGER Joseph Dunninger was born in New York close to the turn of the centuryin 1892. A bit precocious, Joseph took to magic at the early age of five. This is most unusual since the rest of the family had no ties to magic at all: his father was a textile manufacturer, his mother a housewife, one brother a painter and designer, the other a violinist. Regardless of that, his love for the art was cultivated early and encouraged by his parents, who were amused by the child's dexterity in simple tricks. Entirely self-taught, the very young Joseph proved to be quite prodigious, to the extent that his first professional show was performed when he was at the staggering age of seven before a Masonic Club in New York. He billed himself as "Master Joseph Dunninger, Child Magician." By the time he was sixteen, Dunninger was an adult magician with an enviable reputation and appeared for a year at Eden Musee in New York City. Even at this age, Dunninger ranked as one of the most prominent magicians of the time and he took to a vaudeville tour with the Keith-Orpheum Circuit. Far from being entertainers, these frauds made their living by performing false seances and receiving payment for supposedly allowing the dead to speak from "the spirit world". In conjunction with Scientific American magazine and the Universal Council for Psychic Research, Dunninger offered $10,000 to any medium who could reproduce by psychic or supernatural means any physical phenomena that he could not reproduce by natural means or explain in materialistic terms. Dunninger also offered $10,000 to anyone who, with the aid of "the spirit world", could disclose the translation to secret coded messages entrusted to him by Harry Houdini and Thomas Edison. In addition, another $10,000 was offered to anyone who could introduce him to a real ghost.Challenges were very much part of Dunninger's act. His challenges ranged from blindfold driving tests to mental projection tests.
