Helprin, Mark - A Soldier of a Great War
A Soldier of a Great War Then, about 61 pages in depending on your particular copy of the novel, the old man begins to tell his story: an epic story of love, a world war, paintings and beauty and the sunlight on Roman architecture. A Soldier of a Great War.
    website
biography: In other words, Mark Helprin is a badass. Alessandro Giuliani, the old man, was once a professor of aesthetics in Rome before World War I intervenes. Before the war, he stands against the machinations bringing Europe to the edge of disaster, but as everyone he knows and loves is sucked into the war with Austria Giuliani is forced to the front. His heroic service and gifts as a soldier take him from Sicily to the Alps to Hungarian Plains. The Tempest (pictured above) when his life seems at its darkest points. A Soldier of a Great War can take a while to get through, but few novels in my short life have been as engrossing as this one.

  • ASIN: Book Description New York City is subsumed in arctic winds, dark nights, and white lights, its life unfolds, for it is an extraordinary hive of the imagination, the greatest house ever built, and nothing exists that can check its vitality. One night in winter, Peter Lakeorphan and master-mechanic, attempts to rob a fortress-like mansion on the Upper West Side.
Though he thinks hte house is empty, the daughter of the house is home. Thus begins the love between Peter Lake, a middle-aged Irish burglar, and Beverly Penn, a young girl, who is dying.
Peter Lake, a simple, uneducated man, because of a love that, at first he does not fully understand, is driven to stop time and bring back the dead. His great struggle, in a city ever alight with its own energy and beseiged by unprecedented winters, is one of the most beautiful and extraordinary stories of American literature.
Customer Reviews: A Rewarding Tale Before delving into Winter's Tale, you must suspend your disbelief. Time will not proceed in a straight line, and travel through it will be possible. Cities and characters will disappear and reappear elsewhere. Horses will fly, the dead will come alive, and clouds will swallow people, places, and even cruise ships. To believe in these elements, you'll need to believe in magic. A challenge, yes, but if you're up to it, you're in for a real treat.

A Dove of the East and Other Stories Ellis Island and Other Stories , and The Pacific and Other Stories ), five novels ( Refiner's Fire, Winter's Tale, A Soldier of the Great War, Memoir From Antproof Case , and Freddy and Fredericka ), and three children's books ( Swan Lake, A City in Winter , and The Veil of Snows , all illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg), speak eloquently for themselves and are remarkable throughout for the sustained beauty and power of their language. And Helprin's academic training, military service, decades of journalism, and involvement in politics and statesmanship as an obligation of citizenship, although secondary at best, have gained some attention nonetheless. A review by Jennifer Goheen In olden times a Queen and an usurper fight for control of a kingdom. The story is narrated by a singer of old songs. At first the usurper is in control and he summons the narrator to ask him to change his songs. The narrator refuses and is thrown in a dungeon. Luckily, the Queen's army soon conquers the usurper and the narrator is released from jail and joins the Queen's guards. The Queen has to deal with the greedy, stupid and selfish Tookisheims, who don't like the way she rules and who say bad things about her in their newspapers. They find a small girl who has seen the usurper destroy her village. Pretty soon the tricky usurper returns with a large army and the narrator has to make a plan to save the city. When the Queen has to choose between a man's life or her kingdom's fate, which does she choose? There are many bloody battles before the surprising ending. This book had a good plot, interesting characters and a great ending. Most of the main characters are never given names, which makes them more mysterious. The Queen and the narrator are brave, wise and proud, while the Tookisheims and the usurper are evil and greedy. There is a lot of description, but not a lot of dialogue. The story is sad at times but hopeful at the end. The pictures are colorful and realistic and they do a good job of describing the story.

    Biography
American author of "A Winter's Tale," published in 1984. Most of his short stories and novels have featured war, the sea and machines as chief ingredients. Referring to machines he stated, "I saw something in machines which was this: In machines there are no excuses. …When you're putting back together a machine you've taken apart, you can't take shortcuts. You have to do the right thing even if you're under pressure. You're dealing with … the subjective laws of nature." The son of a film executive, Helprin states he didn't want to grow up to emulate either parent who, in his estimation, were too physically unfit, pleasure-seeking and undisciplined. Helprin, a Harvard graduate, leads a Spartan life eschewing rich food, coffee, alcohol, smoking, procrastination, professional sports, or disorderly environments. In fact he said, "I don't care about the pleasure of eating food. If I could, I'd take all my nourishment in a pill." He dresses neatly, runs, rearranges his refrigerator alphabetically by food group, climbs mountains and loves to write. After he left Harvard University's Middle Eastern Studies graduate program to enlist in Israel's armed forces at age 25, he gained a year of experiences as an egg-peeler, dishwasher and border guard in the Israeli Infantry and Air Corps from which his active imagination later drew. While he saw little action, Helprin seems to need only to get close to an event to absorb its essence and transform his perceptions into art.

M A R K H E L P R I N REWRITING BOB DOLE Novelist Mark Helprin talks about his fascination with war and death, his exile from the liberal literary establishment, and his greatest writing challenge making flatlander Bob into a figure of mythical stature. By MARK SCHAPIRO Illustration by
    Zach Trenholm
M ark Helprin is more than just an accomplished novelist and sometime conservative commentator. He's also a would-be kingmaker. The novelist has been besieged by the press ever since it was revealed that he authored Bob Dole's Senate retirement speech an unusually lyrical oration by the Kansas solon's dry standards. Helprin's soaring words were widely credited with at least temporarily recharging Dole's languishing presidential campaign. After laboring unsuccessfully for an interview with the feted speechwriter, one recent afternoon I received a mysterious phone call. The caller challenged me to guess his identity, providing me with a series of obscure clues: he was calling from "the state with the second largest park service, after Alaska;" he lived in "the north of that state;" he was sitting at a "polished wooden desk with a clutter of papers in an office with rosewood panels;" he was "looking out the window onto a farm field of alfalfa." I finally realized that I was talking to none other than the elusive Mark Helprin himself. My acumen was rewarded with a nearly hour-long interview, as the novelist sat in his rosewood-paneled office in the farmhouse in upstate New York where he lives with his wife and two children.
