  • ASIN: Book Description Felicia Hemans was the most widely read woman poet in the nineteenth century English-speaking world. Broadview's edition shows why she was one of the few standard poets to be found in middle-class homes on both sides of the Atlantic, despite being routinely disparaged as a "merely" feminine poet. Included here is poetry representative of her entire career, from often-anthologized works, such as "The Homes of England" and "Casabianca," to several long poems in their entirety, such as "The Forest Sanctuary." Also included are selections of her prose and letters, a comprehensive introduction, and selections of views and reviews showing her changing and controversial place in culture into the twentieth century. All selections are edited, annotated and introduced.

    She was born Felicia Dorothea Browne in Liverpool , a granddaughter of the Venetian consul in that city. Her father's business soon brought the family to Denbighshire in North Wales , where she spent her youth. They made their home near Abergele and St. Asaph Flintshire ), and it is clear that she came to regard herself as Welsh by adoption, later referring to Wales as "Land of my childhood, my home and my dead". Her first poems, dedicated to the Prince of Wales , were published in Liverpool in 1808, when she was only fourteen, arousing the interest of no less a person than Percy Bysshe Shelley , who briefly corresponded with her. She quickly followed them up with "England and Spain" [1808] and "The domestic affections", published in 1812, the year of her marriage to Captain Alfred Hemans, an Irish army officer some years older than herself. The marriage took her away from Wales, to Daventry in Northamptonshire until 1814.

    Casabianca
    The boy stood on the burning deck
    Whence all but he had fled;
    The flame that lit the battle's wreck
    Shone round him o'er the dead. Yet beautiful and bright he stood,
    As born to rule the storm;
    A creature of heroic blood,
    A proud, though child-like form. The flames rolled on he would not go
    Without his Father's word;
    That father, faint in death below,
    His voice no longer heard. He called aloud 'say, Father, say If yet my task is done?' He knew not that the chieftain lay Unconscious of his son. 'Speak, father!' once again he cried, 'If I may yet be gone!' And but the booming shots replied, And fast the flames rolled on. Upon his brow he felt their breath, And in his waving hair, And looked from that lone post of death In still yet brave despair. And shouted but once more aloud, 'My father! must I stay?' While o'er him fast, through sail and shroud

    Felicia Hemans The Traveller
    at the Source of the Nile In sunset's light, o'er Afric thrown,
    A wanderer proudly stood
    Beside the well-spring, deep and lone,
    Of Egypt's awful flood;
    The cradle of that mighty birth,
    So long a hidden thing to earth! He heard its life's first murmuring sound,
    A low mysterious tone;
    A music sought, but never found,
    By kings and warriors gone;
    He listen'd and his heart beat high That was the song of victory! The rapture of a conqueror's mood Rush'd burning through his frame, The depths of that green solitude Its torrents could not tame; There stillness lay, with eve's last smile, Round those calm fountains of the Nile. Night came with stars: across his soul There swept a sudden change; E'en at the pilgrim's glorious goal A shadow dark and strange Breathed from the thought, so swift to fall O'er triumph's hour and is this all? No more than this! what seem'd it now First by that spring to stand? A thousand streams of lovelier flow Bathed his own mountain land!

    Romantic Passions
    Hemans, Heber, and Superstition and Revelation
    Nanora Sweet , University of Missouri-St. Louis
    This essay offers a close reading of Felicia Hemans's fragment Superstition and Revelation (c. 1820), her abandoned syncretic account of early Christianity and its pagan origins. Subsequent comments by Hemans suggest that the poem might have been a centerpiece for her work. During her last illness she said of another projected religious poem The Temple that she regretted not finishing the "noble and complete work" worthy of "a British Poetess" (Chorley 2: 257-58). In our moment, when Hemans is being considered as a first- or second-rank Romantic poet, several useful ways of reading Superstition and Revelation suggest themselves. As long-time readers of Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron, we might read Hemans's fragment alongside their syncretic experiments, for instance in Prometheus Unbound and Manfred . As new readers of Hemans, we might use this provocative fragmentand the scene of its fragmentationas a means to understanding her purposefulness as a writer, her "intentions," we might say. This paper will combine elements of both ways of reading.
    As McGann's qualifier "all-but-declared" suggests, a number of us remain perplexed by Hemans's tone: some are certain that the cruel ironies in her materials inform and structure her rhetoric, and some are certain that they do not. David Latane's comment from the
