Fine, with none of the spine fading to the cloth that usually plagues this title, in fine dustwrapper (the presumed first issue with the 2.5" green band on the rear panel). Housed in an older chemise and custom quarter pigskin and cloth slipcase. Bookplate on the front pastedown of Professor Fraser Drew of the University of Buffalo in New York. As a young teacher, Drew wrote a letter to which Hemingway responded kindly. Eventually, Hemingway invited Drew to visit him in Havana. On April 8, 1955, one year after Hemingway won the Nobel Prize for Literature, Drew and Hemingway spent a long afternoon discussing literature and teaching, later recounted by Drew in his article "Unedited Notes on a Visit to Finca Vigia" (in Bruccoli, Conversations With Ernest Hemingway , 89-98), an account remarkable for its portrayal of Hemingway's modesty and generosity. An exceptionally fresh and bright copy of Hemingway's famous account of big-game hunting, with digressions on literary matters. Hanneman I:179.

On a fishing trip in 1939, director Howard Hawks told Hemingway as much. "Ernest, you're a damn fool. You need money, you know. You can't do all the things you'd like to do. If I make three dollars in a picture, you get one of them. I can make a picture out of your worst story."

Hemingway, circa 1927
I t is probably safe to say that no other American writer perhaps no other writer this century achieved the combination of international celebrity and literary stature that Ernest Hemingway did during his lifetime. Success came early. By 1927, when The Atlantic Monthly published his short story "Fifty Grand," Hemingway's first two books the collection of stories In Our Time (1925) and the novel The Sun Also Rises (1926) had already established the twenty-eight-year-old author as a rising literary star on the expatriate scene in Paris. By the time he received the Nobel Prize for literature, in 1954, Hemingway was a household name, and the celebrity persona had long since overshadowed the stylistic genius of his early work, on which his reputation as a modernist master has continued to rest.

Hemingway, Ernest American novelist and short-story writer, whose style is characterized by crispness, laconic dialogue, and emotional understatement. Hemingway's writings and his personal life exerted a profound influence on American writers of his time. Many of his works are regarded as classics of American literature, and some have been made into motion pictures.
Born in Oak Park, Illinois, Hemingway was educated at Oak Park High School. After graduating from high school in 1917, he became a reporter for the Kansas City Star, but he left his job within a few months to serve as a volunteer ambulance driver in Italy during World War I (1914-1918). He later transferred to the Italian infantry and was severely wounded. After the war he served as a correspondent for the Toronto Star and then settled in Paris. While there, he was encouraged in creative work by the American expatriate writers Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. After 1927 Hemingway spent long periods of time in Key West, Florida, and in Spain and Africa. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), he returned to Spain as a newspaper correspondent. In World War II (1939-1945) he again was a correspondent and later was a reporter for the United States First Army; although he was not a soldier, he participated in several battles. After the war Hemingway settled near Havana, Cuba, and in 1958 he moved to Ketchum, Idaho.

HEMINGWAY, Ernest For Whom the Bell Tolls For Whom the Bell Tolls has been called Hemingway's most ambitious novel, and it is the one in which his political convictions reveal themselves most fully: he effectively conveys the idea that a people's freedom is worth fighting, and even dying, for. This passionate defense of the ill-fated Spanish Republic was so compelling that 30 years later, under the Franco government, the book was still entirely banned in Spain; copies were smuggled into the country and passed around surreptitiously. Two owner names on the front flyleaf, some offsetting to the front endpapers, and a bit of rubbing to the spine cloth; still near fine in a very good, first issue dust jacket, rubbed mostly along the spine and flap folds, and inexpertly colored at the extremities, although this is most noticeable on the verso, where there is also one tape repair.
