Lt. Henry O. Flipper's Quest for Justice:
"As honorable a record in the Army as any officer in it"
Born into slavery in Thomasville, Georgia, on March 21, 1856, Henry Ossian Flipper was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1873. Over the next four years he overcame harassment, isolation, and insults to become West Point's first African American graduate and the first African American commissioned officer in the regular U.S. Army. Flipper was stationed first at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, later served at Forts Elliott, Quitman, and Davis, Texas. He served as a signal officer and quartermaster, fought Apaches, installed telegraph lines, and supervised the building of roads. At Fort Sill, the young lieutenant directed the construction of a drainage system that helped prevent the spread of malaria. Still known as "Flipper's Ditch," the ditch is commemorated by a bronze marker at Fort Sill and the fort is listed as a National Historic Landmark. In 1881, while serving at Fort Davis, Flipper's commanding officer accused him of embezzling $3,791.77 from commissary funds. A court-martial found him not guilty of embezzlement but convicted him of conduct unbecoming an officer and ordered him dismissed from the Army.

The son of a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Henry Ossawa Tanner was raised in an affluent, well educated African-American family. Although reluctant at first, Tanner's parents eventually responded to their son's unflagging desire to pursue an artistic career and encouraged his ambitions. In 1879, Tanner enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he joined Thomas Eakins 's coterie. Tanner moved to Atlanta in 1889 in an unsuccessful attempt to support himself as an artist and instructor among prosperous middle class African-Americans. Bishop and Mrs. Joseph C. Hartzell arranged for Tanner's first solo exhibition, the proceeds from which enabled the struggling artist to move to Paris in 1891. Illness brought him back to the United States in 1893, and it was at this point in his career that Tanner turned his attention to genre subjects of his own race. In 1893 most American artists painted African-American subjects either as grotesque caricatures or sentimental figures of rural poverty. Henry Ossawa Tanner, who sought to represent black subjects with dignity, wrote: "Many of the artists who have represented Negro life have seen only the comic, the ludicrous side of it, and have lacked sympathy with and appreciation for the warm big heart that dwells within such a rough exterior." The banjo had become a symbol of derision, and caricatures of insipid, smiling African-Americans strumming the instrument were a cliche. In

Contents Biography Films ... Agee On Film The movies have produced one of their rare great works of art. When Laurence Olivier's magnificent screen production of Shakespeare's Henry V was first disclosed to a group of Oxford's impassive Shakespeare pundits, there was only one murmur of dissent. A woman specialist insisted that all the war horses which take part in the Battle of Agincourt should have been stallions.
The film was given its U. S. premiere this week (in Boston's Esquire Theater). This time, the horses engendered no complaint. At last there had been brought to the screen, with such sweetness, vigor, insight and beauty that it seemed to have been written yesterday, a play by the greatest dramatic poet who ever lived. It had never been done before. For Laurence Olivier, 38 (who plays Henry and directed and produced the picture), the event meant new stature. For Shakespeare, it meant a new splendor in a new, viral medium. Exciting as was the artistic development of Laurence Olivier, last seen by U. S. cinemaddicts in films like Rebecca and Wuthering Heights

Henry O. Tanner
By Leigh Jackson Daily News Staff Writer
Henry Ossawa Tanner, the turn-of-the-century African- American painter, lived a life of gentle ironies. He painted only two scenes of black American life, but they won him permanent fame among his people. He achieved success as an American painter, although from the distant shores of France, where he spent 46 of his 78 years. He clung to the traditional style he developed during his 25 years in Philadelphia, even as younger artists stormed the gates of tradition and declared victory. Still, Tanner's career embodied even the contradictory elements of his life. His works were encompassing, large in spirit. In celebration of that spirit, the Philadelphia Museum of Art will host a major retrospective of Tanner's work starting Jan. 20. The exhibit will be on display through April 14, then travel to the Detroit Institute of Arts, Atlanta's High Museum of Art and the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.
Stretching from Tanner's student days, when he painted seascapes and animals, to his late religious works, this retrospective is the most expansive of the five held since his death in 1937. It also marks the first time the Philadelphia Museum of Art has mounted a major retrospective of a black artist.
"We have shown and collected work by African-American artists for many years, but this is the first one-man show we have organized for a national tour," said Robert Montgomery Scott, Art Museum president. "I personally find Tanner's work both poignant and uplifting and look forward to seeing it repeatedly while it is here." Featured are more than 90 paintings and 15

The Lost Epic
Henry O. Flipper, 10th US Cavalry
by C. F. Eckhardt P erhaps the most enigmatic figure in Texas and the West is not Johnny Ringo of maybe-suicide/maybe-not, nor the deliberately mysterious Mysterious Dave Mather, but rather 2LT Henry O. Flipper, 10th US Cavalry. Flipper’s early life is fairly well documented. Born a slave in Georgia, he was emancipated in 1865 while still a child. He had an apparently-impressive mentality and was well-educated. He was appointed from Georgia to the US Military Academy at West Point, New York. Henry O. Flipper Flipper was by no means the first Black ever appointed to West Point, but he ws the first to complete four years and graduate as a commissioned officer in the US Army. The fact that he completed the course is a tribute to his tenacity, for his years at West Point were not happy ones. The Corps of Cadets has a treatment known as ‘the silence’ for those who offend gravely against the cadets’ own unwritten code of conduct. It consists of—silence. No cadet will speak to a cadet under ‘silence,’ nor even acknowledge his existence. No one will communicate with him in any way other than through official orders, which may be given orally. He will be ignored—as though he doesn’t exist.
Flipper was given ‘silence’ from the day he entered the academy. Cadets given ‘silence’ usually resign. Some have committed suicide. Flipper endured four full years of ‘silence’ and graduated.

Actor Henry O entered filmdom almost by accident, on a completely spontaneous and unplanned note. As one raised in China and sent to western-run missionary schools, he spent 30 years working in the Children's Art Theater, where he held down positions as an actor and the deputy art director. A middle-aged O moved to America with his wife, ostensibly to look after their grandchildren, but soon received an invitation for a theatrical audition and built up a prolific career essaying parts in television, plays, and films, invariably typecast in elderly Asian roles.
