HERBERT GEORGE WELLS (1866-), English novelist was born at Bromley Kent , on the 21st of September 1866, the son of Joseph Wells, a professional cricketer. He was educated at Midhurst grammar school and at the Royal College of Science, where he was trained in physics, chemistry astronomy geology and biology . He graduated B.Sc. of London University in 1888 with first-class honours, taught science in a private school, and subsequently did private coaching. In 1893 he began to write for the Pall Mall Gazette of which he was dramatic critic in 1895. He also wrote for Nature and the Saturday Review. After the success of his fantastic story The Time Machine (1895) he gave his time chiefly to the writing of romances, in which the newest scientific and technical discoveries were used to advance his views on politics and sociology . But he did not confine himself to fiction. His Anticipations (1902) showed his real gift for sociological speculation . Beginning with a chapter on the means of locomotion in the 10th century, it went on to discuss war, the conflict of languages, faith, morals, the elimination of the unfit, and other general topics, with remarkable acuteness and constructive ability. edit Biography
George was educated at Cardiff High School and spent one session at University College, Cardiff before matriculating at Jesus College, Oxford in 1911 as a science scholar. He obtained a first-class degree in Natural Sciences in 1914. At the outbreak of the First World War , he enlisted in the Royal Welch Fusiliers , reaching the rank of lieutenant and seeing service at Gallipoli , where he was wounded. His health suffered further when posted to Mesopotamia, and he was invalided home. He then worked in the explosives department of the Ministry of Munitions , and gained first-hand knowledge of modern methods for manufacturing heavy chemicals. He was appointed by Jesus College as a Research Fellow and Lecturer in Chemistry in 1919, later becoming an Official Fellow and Tutor. He also held the college offices of Librarian, Junior Bursar and Senior Bursar. Within the university, he took charge of colloid chemistry and was appointed by Oxford University as one of its representatives on Oxford City Council . He was regarded as an authority on teaching science in schools, and was a member of committees in Wales and in Oxford controlling school examinations. His time for published work was limited by his other commitments, but he wrote on the absorption of gases on glass surfaces, on the theory of strong electrolytes and other subjects. He died on 19 April 1939 at the age of 46.

Herbert George was the fourth and last son born at 47 The High Street, Bromley Kent to Joseph Wells, a former domestic gardener and at the time shopkeeper and professional cricketer and his wife Sarah Neal a former domestic servant and occasional housekeeper. Both parents were members of the working class. They were earning a meagre income that helped support their family for several years. To spend his time he started reading and soon became a devoted bibliophile . Later that year he entered the Academy of Thomas Morley, presumably named after Thomas Morley ) a noted composer of madrigals . He studied in the Academy till . But in another accident had affected his life. This time it had happened to his father and left Joseph Wells with a fractured thigh. The accident effectively put an end to Joseph's career as a cricketer and his earnings as a shopkeeper were not enough to compensate for the loss.

Wells' frühe Geschichten kreisten um Begegnungen zwischen Menschen und seltsamen Lebensformen, wie in »The Stolen Bacillus«, »In the Avu Observatory«, »The Flowering of the Strange Orchid« und »Aepyornis Island« (alle 1894). Wiltshire , England Occupation Poet, orator priest George Herbert (3 April 1593 – 1 March 1633) was a Welsh poet, orator and Anglican priest . Being born into an artistic and wealthy family, he received a good education which led to his holding prominent positions at Cambridge University and Parliament . As a student at Trinity College, Cambridge , England, George Herbert excelled in languages and music. He went to college with the intention of becoming a priest, but his scholarship attracted the attention of King James I/VI . Herbert served in parliament for two years. After the death of King James and at the urging of a friend, Herbert's interest in ordained ministry was renewed. In 1630, in his late thirties he gave up his secular ambitions and took holy orders in the Church of England , spending the rest of his life as a rector of the little parish of Fugglestone St Peter with Bemerton St Andrew, near
