The poems of his final years, written while a clergyman at Bemerton near Salisbury, have been said to resemble nothing else in literature. They combine a profound spirituality with a restless experimentation and their language remains fresh and inspiring, even today. Herbert balanced a secular career with a life of theological contemplation, and the delicate balance (and occasional struggle) of such a life is reflected in the poetry he produced during a short life in which he held positions successively at Cambridge University, in the British Parliament, and his last three years in service of the Anglican Church . His mastery of just the right details in just the right order has made him, after centuries of neglect, one of the most beloved poets of the seventeenth century.

The Harvard Classics. The Life of Mr. George Herbert G EORGE H ERBERT was born the third day of April, in the year of our redemption 1593. The place of his birth was near to the town of Montgomery, and in that castle that did then bear the name of that town and county; that castle was then a place of state and strength, and had been successively happy in the family of the Herberts, who had long possessed it; and with it, a plentiful estate, and hearts as liberal to their poor neighbours. A family that hath been blessed with men of remarkable wisdom, and a willingness to serve their country, and, indeed, to do good to all mankind; for which they are eminent: But alas! this family did in the late rebellion suffer extremely in their estates; and the heirs of that castle saw it laid level with that earth that was too good to bury those wretches that were the cause of it.

26. George Herbert
Summary of more than just the major poems.
http://faculty.goucher.edu/eng211/george_herbert.htm
George Herbert, The Temple Genre: sacred lyric collection imitating the architectural structure of a church while tracing the story of the persona's struggle with faith. Form: extraordinary metrical experiments, including "shaped poems," the most famous of which are "The Altar" and "Easter Wings." The book as a whole also has the form of a spiritual autobiography in lyrics, sacralizing the sonnet cycle's obsessive narration of the Lover-Beloved relationship and redirecting its interest in philosophy to the limitations of will-directed reason and the power of faith to command the believer. Characters: Herbert's persona is almost indistinguishable from his historical one, except that some of these poetic situations clearly are fanciful, and the personae of "Love," "God," "heart," arise from the medieval allegorical tradition but transcend it by means of Herbert's dexterous and surprising ability to make them psychological forces as well as metaphysical phenomena. Summary: Herbert's struggle tends to reflect his personal ambitions for a worldly life which were set against the demands of his rural parsonage at Bemerton. His ambition raised him from the fifth son of a dead Welch father to a member of Parliament and of the faculty of Cambridge. But the death of patrons led him to reconsider his objectives, and his last 3 years he lived as a poor country parson and wrote all the poems in

Herbert George Wells, the son of an unsuccessful tradesman, was born in Bromley on 21st September, 1866. After a basic education at a local school, Wells was apprenticed as a draper. Wells disliked the work and in 1883 became a pupil-teacher at Midhurst Grammar School. While at Midhurst Wells won a scholarship to the School of Science where he was taught biology by T. H. Huxley. Wells found Huxley an inspiring teacher and as a result developed a strong interest in evolution. Wells founded and edited the Science Schools Journal while at university. Wells was disappointing with the teaching he received in the second year and so in 1887 he left without obtaining a degree.
