There is motion; but nothing moves. And change; yet the objects stand still in time. There is form, and mass; and the suggestion of form, a visibly defined absence of mass. Here, shadow and object meld. Above all, there is a deep, moving inspiration, expressed in faultless technique. Herbert George's current exhibition of sculpture and sculptural assemblage, "Shadow Portraits/Still Life Sculptures," is scheduled to run from June 2 through July 8, 2000 at Fassbender Gallery, 835 West Washington in Chicago's West Loop Gate Gallery District. "Shadow Portraits/Still Life Sculptures" rewards each repeated visit. The work in "Shadow Portraits/Still Life Sculptures" plays with the shifting perspective between a walking viewer and the sculptural object, and does this beyond the shaped masses, angles and coherent flow of the object's own physical form. As one circles a piece, one feels a cinematographic effect of sequence the dynamic of light and perspective a logic of perception which cyclically ends wherever a viewer first started, and in this process each sculpture permutes its identity and effects.

  • Every literary period harbours within it traces of the popular culture of the age. Certainly, the poetry of George Herbert (1593-1633) reveals fragments, for example, of the sentiments that were to lead to the ascendance of Puritanism in England within a decade of his deathsentiments such as the emphasis on personal salvation (The Pilgrimage), the importance of prayer to the Christian life (Prayer, Denial), and the need to seek absolution for sins from God (Love 3). Yet, for all Herbert's longing for personal spiritual reconciliation with God, his diversion into recording and possibly inventing proverbs betrays his vocational imperative, as an Anglican priest, to provide lessons to his congregation, in which common sense, natural imagery, and "conventional" Christian teachings are presented.
  • Over three-quarters of the 1032 proverbs in the collection which appears under Herbert's name have French, Italian, or Spanish origins or equivalents

  • A celebrated advantage of electronic editions of early modern literature is their capacity for representing multiple states of the text while avoiding a critical apparatus that relegates variants to footnotes. One can imagine, for example, an edition of Herbert's English verse comprised of the Williams and Tanner manuscripts and the 1633 editio princeps , all hypertextually linked and presented in a frames format that foregrounds rather than obscures or literally marginalizes variation. This lateral access to textual difference which would strongly suggest the reader qualify any claims s/he wishes to make about Herbert by recognizing in the text evidence of multiple Herberts (not to mention the Ferrar scribes at Little Gidding or the printer Thomas Buck) is, however, only one aspect of the textual and thus critical diversity electronic texts offer.
  • Another, which I explore here, has less to do with substantive textual variation than with different methodological approaches to "reading" one and the same version or witness a cognitive or perspectival more than a purely material multiplicity. An electronic edition of the 1633

    Description
George Herbert combined the intellectual and the spiritual, the humble and the divine, to create some of the most moving devotional poetry in the English language. His deceptively simple verse uses the ingenious arguments typical of seventeenth-century metaphysical poets and unusual imagery drawn from musical structures, the natural world, and domestic activity to explore a mosaic of Biblical themes. From the wit and wordplay of "The Puley" and the formal experimentation of "Easter Wings" and "Paradise," to the intense, highly personal relationship between man and God portrayed in "The Collar" and "Redemption," the works collected here show the transcendental power of divine love. This vast collection includes all Herbert’s English poems, selections from his Latin poetry with translations, his major prose work

    Biography
Herbert George Wells, better known as H. G. Wells, was an English writer best known for such science fiction novels as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man. He was a prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction, and produced works in many different genres, including contemporary novels, history, and social commentary. Wells was an outspoken socialist and a pacifist, and his later works became increasingly political and didactic. His middle period novels (1900-1920) were more realistic; they covered lower middle class life and the 'New Woman' and the Suffragettes. Along with Jules Verne, Well is often referred to as "The Father of Science Fiction". (source: Wikipedia)

    Wells, Herbert George Biography
Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) English novelist, journalist, sociologist, and historian, whose science fiction stories have been filmed many times. Wells's best known works are THE TIME MACHINE (1895), one of the first modern science fiction stories, THE INVISIBLE MAN (1897), and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1898). Wells wrote over a hundred of books, about fifty of them novels. "No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their affairs they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water." (from War of the Worlds Along with George Orwell's Nineteen-Eighty-Four and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World , which was a pessimistic answer to scientific optimism, Wells's novels are among the classics of science-fiction. Later Wells's romantic and enthusiastic conception of technology turned more doubtful. His bitter side is seen early in the novel BOON (1915), which was a parody of Henry James Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley, Kent. His father was a shopkeeper and a professional cricketer until he broke his leg. In his early childhood Wells developed love for literature. His mother served from time to time as a housekeeper at the nearby estate of Uppark, and young Wells studied books in the library secretly. When his father's business failed, Wells was apprenticed like his brothers to a draper. He spent the years between 1880 and 1883 in Windsor and Southsea, and later recorded them in KIPPS (1905). In the story Arthur Kipps is raised by his aunt and uncle. Kipps is also apprenticed to a draper. After learning that he has been left a fortune, Kipps enters the upper-class society, which Wells describes with sharp social criticism.
