Book Description Customer Reviews: A Balancing Act I purchased this book as soon as I saw it. Although I am not as disappointed as Mr. Dobyns (a wonderful writer himself), early on I did take a number of poems and place them side by side with their respective John and Bogdana Carpenter translations. (Although I don't know Polish, I had sensed something.) Dobyns is right; the Alissa Valles translations are flat and stiff in comparison. Considering Zbigniew Herbert is not only one of the most original poets of the last century but also one of the weightiest, this testament to his life's work falls short. However, it is a great pleasure to have even a reasonable facsimile of his collected poems. Even in the hands of inept translators, Herbert's poems can shine. Porcupine These are awful translations. Alissa Valles hardly knows Polish and her English is clumsy and graceless. These translations of one of the greatest modern poets are a terrible disappointment. Why Daniel Halpern, the publisher, chose Valles instead of John and Bogdana Carpenter, who had published a number of excellent books of Herbert translations with the same press (Ecco) is mind-boggling. Valles has taken a great poet and turned him into a minor poet. It is unlikely that a new collected poems will be published in English for many years and to have the Halpern/Valles edition stand as the only collected poems is like having Popeye stand for Michelangelo. The main focus of Herbert Zbigniew's incisive poetry was dictatorship
    By Arif Azad
When I first came upon the great Polish poet Herbert Zbigniew's line 'be faithful and go,' I felt permanently bound to his poetry. The call to duty in the midst of gloom that the poem portrayed was something that spoke to me. I was introduced to Zbigniew's powerful poetry thorough freedom of expression magazine Index on Censorship where I worked for a number of years. As the Index's original incarnation came into existence to highlight the plight of writers and dissidents in the Soviet bloc, it was natural for the Index to continue to plough in its original furrow. It was against this backdrop that poetry of Herbert Zbigniew's poems and writings found a regular mention in its pages. Doubly unfaithful

(A Translation of The White Castle by Orhan Pamuk)
    By Muhammad Umar Memon
    Publisher: Scheherazad, Karachi 2007
192 pages By Anis Nagi In 2006, Orhan Pamuk, an outstanding Turkish novelist who has written a dozen novels, was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. This surprised many Asian writers who had never heard his name. Perhaps Pamuk's books are addressed to the Europeans with whom he wants a cultural compromise. The New York Times called him a rising star in Asia. The exaggerated praise by Western critics and media needs to be examined in the light of the contemporary political and religious scenario. Turkey is neither in the East nor in the West but between the two. Orhan Pamuk still seems to live in the era of Kamalism in which the Enlightenment, secular life and Westernization on the debris of the Ottoman empire was needed to build up a new Turkey.
