(b Herbert attended an underground high school during the German occupation of Poland and also took secret military training courses with the Polish Home Army. He graduated in law after World War II and also studied philosophy and art history. He wrote poetry but published little during the period of Socialist Realism in Poland (1949-54). His first collection of poems, Struna shwiat l a (1956; "Chord of Light"), was followed by Hermes, pies i gwiazda (1957; "Hermes, a Dog and a Star"), Studium przedmiotu (1961; "A Study of the Object"), Pan Cogito Mr. Cogito ), and Raport z oblezonego miasta Report from the Besieged City Herbert's poetry expresses an ironic moralism in free verse laden with classical and other historical allusions. In reflecting on Poland's traumatic experiences at the hands of the Nazis and Soviets during World War II and afterward, he uses a sarcastic rhetoric to question the gap between ideal morality and the nightmares of 20th-century totalitarianism. Herbert traveled to France and Italy and published the essays inspired by these visits as Barbarzynca w ogrodzie (1962; "A Barbarian in the Garden"). His poems have been translated into English (

Herbert, Zbigniew
Polish, 1924–
Zbigniew Herbert is an author not particularly well known for his essays; his poetry is what has earned him a reputation as one of the best contemporary writers now living in Poland. Yet his two modest collections of essays, inspired by his travels to France, Italy, and Holland—Barbarzyńca w ogrodzie (1962.; Barbarian in the Garden) and Martwa natura z wędzidłem (1991; Still Life with a Bridle: Essays and Apocryphas)—secure Herbert a place among the world’s most distinguished essayists. His modest output as an essayist is supplemented by his early and lesser-known attempts at prose writing. Herbert started his career in the late 1940s and early 1950s by publishing articles, feuilletons, and reviews of books, theater, painting, and photography. He wrote for such periodicals as Dziś i Jutro (Today and tomorrow), Słowo Powszechne (Universal word), Przeglqd Powszechny (Universal review), Tygodnik Powszechny (Universal weekly), and
Twórczość (Creation). Herbert’s contributions to these periodicals—along with his publications in the Paris-based Polish journals Kultura (Culture) and Zeszyty Literackie (Literary notebooks)—may indicate the kind of audience to which he addresses his essays: his readers are highly select and belong to the intellectual and literary elite.

Zbigniew Herbert was born on October 29, 1924, in Lvov (then in eastern Poland, it is now a part of the Ukraine). His grandfather was an Englishman who came to Lvov to teach English. His father, a former member of the Legions that had fought for restoration of Poland's independence, was a bank manager. Herbert's formal education began in Lvov and continued under German occupation in the form of clandestine study at the underground King John Casimir University, where he majored in Polish literature. He was a member of the underground resistance movement. In 1944, he moved to Krakow, and three years later he graduated from the University of Krakow with a master's degree in economics. He also received a law degree from Nicholas Copernicus University in Torun and studied philosophy at the University of Warsaw under Henryk Elzenberg. During the 1950s he worked at many low-paying jobs because he refused to write within the framework of official Communist guidelines. After widespread riots against Soviet control in 1956 brought about a political "thaw," Herbert became an administrator at the Union of Polish Composers and published his first collection
