Goddard) Next (Robert Hooke) Robert Herrick (August 24, 1591 – October 1674) was a seventeenth century English poet and cleric, known as the most famous of the "Sons of Ben," a poetic movement among the Cavalier Poets of the mid seventeenth-century that both held up the classically-influenced poetry of Ben Jonson as an exemplary role-model, and rejected the fanaticism of the Puritans and supported the Restoration of Charles II. Herrick, who knew Jonson personally, carried on Jonson's mission of reinvigorating English poetry by adapting the English language to ancient Greek and Latin forms. In particular, Herrick introduced the Greek style of lyrical poetry to English literature. Herrick's lyrics were notable not only because of their beauty, but because they adhered to the stricture of classical form, and preserved the learned allusions to classical literature and mythology that had been a hallmark of Jonson's works. Herrick's poetic style, however, is noticeably lighter than Jonson's; while Jonson was frequently pedantic and complicated, Herrick is almost always clear, writing in language that is at times almost effortlessly simple. Herrick's themes, although classical, tend more towards the pastoral than the mythological, addressing topics such as the wondrousness of nature and the fleetingness of

Herrick, Robert
(baptized Aug. 24, 1591, London, Eng.d. October 1674, Dean Prior, Devonshire), English cleric and poet, the most original of the "sons of Ben [Jonson]," who revived the spirit of the ancient classic lyric. He is best remembered for the line "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may." Herrick became well known as a poet about 1620-30; many manuscript commonplace books from that time contain his poems. The only book that Herrick published was Hesperides (1648), which included His Noble Numbers, a collection of poems on religious subjects with its own title page dated 1647 but not previously printed. Hesperides contained about 1,400 poems, mostly very short, many of them being brief epigrams. His work appeared after that in miscellanies and songbooks; the 17th-century English composer Henry Lawes and others set some of his songs. Herrick wrote elegies, satires, epigrams, love songs to imaginary mistresses, marriage songs, complimentary verse to friends and patrons, and celebrations of rustic and ecclesiastical festivals. The appeal of his poetry lies in its truth to human sentiments and its perfection of form and style. Frequently light, worldy, and hedonistic, and making few pretensions to intellectual profundity, it yet covers a wide range of subjects and emotions, ranging from lyrics inspired by rural life to wistful evocations of life and love's evanescence and fleeting beauty. Herrick's lyrics are notable for their technical mastery and the interplay of thought, rhythm, and imagery that they display. As a poet Herrick was steeped in the classical tradition; he was also influenced by English folklore and lyrics, by Italian madrigals, by the Bible and patristic literature, and by contemporary English writers, notably Ben Jonson and Robert Burton.

To the Virgins, Make Much of Time
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old time is still a-flying, And this same flower that smiles today, To-morrow will be dying. The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun, The higher he's a-getting, The sooner will his race be run, And nearer he's to setting. That age is best which is the first, When youth and blood are warmer; But being spent, the worse and worst Times still succeed the former. Then be not coy, but use your time, and while ye may, go marry; For having lost just once your prime, You may for ever tarry.

Herrick Robert
, one of the minor poets, of very considerable merit, in the reign. of Charles I. was horn 'in London , but descended from an ancient and genteel family in Leicestershire , the history of which is amply detailed by the able historian of that county. He was the fourth son of Nicholas Herrick, of St. Vedast, Foster-lane, by Julian Stone his wife, and was born in August 1591. He was educated at St. John ’s college, Cambridge , from 1615 to 1617; and Wood, who“ indeed speaks with hesitation, seems wrong in placing him in hiWV'thence Oxonienses. He is said to have afterwards removed to Trinity hall, Cambridge ; but nothing more of his academical progress is known. Being patronised by the earl of Exeter , he was presented by king Charles I. on the promotion of Dr. Potter to the see of Carlisle , to the vicarage of Dean Prior in Devonshire , Oct. I, 1629, where he became distinguished for his poetical talents and wit. During the prevalence of the parliamentary interest, he was ejected from his living, and resided in London in St.
