Carl Hiaasen was born and raised in Florida, where he still lives with his incredibly tolerant family and numerous personal demons.
A graduate of the University of Florida, at age 23 he joined The Miami Herald as a general assignment reporter and went on to work for the paper's weekly magazine and later its prize-winning investigations team. Since 1985 Hiaasen has been writing a regular column, which at one time or another has pissed off just about everybody in South Florida, including his own bosses.
He has outlasted almost all of them, and his column still appears on most Sundays in The Herald's opinion-and-editorial section. It may be viewed online at www.miamiherald.com or in the actual printed edition of the newspaper, which, miraculously, is still being published.
For his journalism and commentary, Hiaasen has received numerous state and national honors, including the Damon Runyon Award from the Denver Press Club. In 2010, Hiaasen received the Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists for writing with "wit, style and an abiding sense of justice." His work has also appeared in many well-known magazines, including Sports Illustrated, Playboy, Time, Life, Esquire and, most improbably, Gourmet.
In the early 1980s, Hiaasen began writing novels with his good friend and distinguished journalist, the late William D. Montalbano. Together they produced three mystery thrillers

SICK PUPPY
By Carl Hiaasen
What most people remember about the 1996 movie Strip Tease is that Demi Moore was reportedly paid four million dollars to dance with her top off. What is forgotten is all the confusion over how the movie was to be marketed. Several different advertisement strategies were attempted, none of which had any great success. Was it a drama about a single mother's fight to raise her kid? Or a comedy with some jarringly nasty parts? The producers should have foreseen questions like these. The script was based on a novel by Carl Hiaasen, a Florida newspaper columnist whose novels have never been comfortably aligned with any one type of response. While seemingly made for the big screen, his work perversely resists adaptation. Sick Puppy is Hiaasen's eighth novel, and if you've read any of the previous seven then you know what to expect. The action is again set in Florida, a place that Hiaasen delights in exposing as a sinkhole of political corruption, media-bred violence, redneck ignorance and affluent vice. The main character is Twilly Spree, a nutty ecoterrorist trying to halt the commercial development of an Edenic Gulf island. His plan is to dognap the black Labrador retriever belonging to one of Florida's slimiest lobbyists and blackmail him into stopping the project. No, it doesn't make a lot of sense, but the plot is really only there to give Hiaasen a chance to throw a bunch of "tabloid freak show" people together and see what happens.

By David Bowman I have it in my head to ask Carl Hiaasen, "Did you make up the word 'fellatrixes,' or is it a common Florida term?" The word appears in his new comic-thriller "Sick Puppy." It designates a woman who performs "world-class" fellatio. But Hiaasen and I are lunching at the Stanhope Hotel, across the street from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. The atmosphere is too refined to discuss "fellatrixes." Instead I ask this native son of Florida if there is a term to describe native sons of Florida. "Endangered species," Hiaasen answers. "The bumper stickers have the state of Florida on them and the word 'native.' That's the badge of pride." Does he have one? "No. I'm not a big bumper-sticker guy." Hiaasen sips some coffee. "They did a survey before Hurricane Andrew hit in '92. At that time more than 70 percent of the people living in South Florida had never been through a hurricane. They moved to a place that back in the 1940s was getting hit two or three times a year by hurricanes. Between Palm Beach and the Keys there's probably 4 and a half million people living on the Gold Coast, which is a bull's-eye in terms of tropical storms. They don't know that. They don't care."
