01/31/2002 - Updated 09:30 AM ET 'Basket Case' weaves tale of the dead rock star By Robert Allen Papinchak, special for USA TODAY Basket Case
by Carl Hiaasen Don't expect Carl Hiaasen's Basket Case to have his trademark cast of certifiable crazies or the usual litany of stalwart causes. Instead, you'll discover a straightforward mainstream mystery tightly wound around a mainly serviceable plot. Hiaasen links the hyper world of hard rock music with the mostly stodgy domain of obit journalism. Forty-six-year-old Jack Tagger is a former hotshot investigative reporter demoted to writing obituaries for a South Florida daily. He becomes intrigued with the death notice of a "has-been rock star," 39-year-old Jimmy Stoma, lead singer for the Slut Puppies. Stoma's accidental drowning in the Bahamas strikes Jack as highly suspicious. If he can prove murder, maybe he can get himself back on the front page. Jack's case has everything going for it. As headline fodder, there's "glamour, notoriety, youth, and tragedy, all set against an exotic tropical backdrop." To support Jack's claims of foul play, there are no stitches in Stoma's body despite an autopsy. In addition, the rest of Jimmy's band begins to die at an inordinately rapid rate. The fact that Jimmy's widow, the "bipolar momma in leather and lace" Cleo Rio, is on the hunt for lost tracks of an unfinished comeback album raises more red flags.

Hiaasen's 'twisted characters' are entertainingly successful
'Sick Puppy' by Carl Hiaasen Knopf, $25 Review by L.D. Meagher January 11, 2000
Web posted at: 5:39 p.m. EST (2239 GMT) (CNN) Welcome to Florida, where despoiling the environment ranks second only to debauchery as the chief goal of politics. It is a place of freewheeling excess, the kind of place where all sorts of predators can prowl. Palmer Stoat is high up the political food chain of the Sunshine State. He's a lobbyist by trade, a fixer by vocation, and a self-centered libertine by inclination. Twilly Spree is at the other end of the spectrum. A generous inheritance has allowed him to indulge his single-minded pursuit of preserving what's left of Florida's pristine wilderness through acts of eco-terrorism. The two collide in the pages of "Sick Puppy," the fast-paced and unabashedly cynical new novel by Carl Hiaasen. The "Miami Herald" columnist packs his story full of twisted characters, outlandish schemes and improbable motivations. Yet he binds them together with such comic energy that the reader is willing to go along for the wild ride.

Carl Hiaasen

Meet twenty-two-year-old Cherry Pye (née Cheryl Bunterman), a pop star since she was fourteen—and about to attempt a comeback from her latest drug-and-alcohol disaster. Now meet Cherry again: in the person of her “undercover stunt double,” Ann DeLusia. Ann portrays Cherry whenever the singer is too “indisposed”—meaning wasted—to go out in public. And it is Ann-mistaken-for-Cherry who is kidnapped from a South Beach hotel by obsessed paparazzo Bang Abbott. Now the challenge for Cherry’s handlers (über–stage mother; horndog record producer; nipped, tucked, and Botoxed twin publicists; weed whacker–wielding bodyguard) is to rescue Ann while keeping her existence a secret from Cherry’s public—and from Cherry herself.
