Introduction
This supplemental unit was developed as part of the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project , funded by the California Technology Assistance Program (CTAP). The links here have been scrutinized for their grade and age appropriateness; however, contents of links on the World Wide Web change continuously. It is advisable that teachers review all links before introducing CyberGuides to students. • What are badgers?
  • Why is bread and jam not a complete meal choice?
  • What choices can the student make to eat healthily?
  • How are bread and jam made?
During this unit, students will:

Biographical Sketch Russell Conwell Hoban was born February 4, 1925 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. From the age of five he drew and sketched a great deal. His older sister, Tana, who became a successful illustrator, strongly influenced him. He entered Temple University but dropped out after five weeks. He attended the Graphic Sketch Club in Philadelphia, where he met his future wife, Lillian Aberman, and the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art from 1941-1943. Serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945, he took part in the Italian campaign and received the Bronze Star. Lillian Aberman Hoban was born May 18, 1925 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she spent her childhood. She attended the Museum School and Hanya Holm School of Dance. Even as a child Lillian wanted to illustrate children's books, and at age fourteen she enrolled in classes at the Graphic Sketch Club. Later, she won a scholarship to art school and majored in illustration. The two married in 1944 and moved to New York. Lillian gave up illustration to study and teach dance professionally, until the early 1960s when she teamed up with her husband to produce children's books. In New York after the war, Russell worked as a magazine illustrator and advertising studio artist (1945-1951); a story board artist and character designer at a film studio (1951); a television art director at advertising agencies (1952-1957) and a free-lance illustrator for advertising agencies and magazines, including

    A life in writing
    The shaman and his exobrain
Russell Hoban tells James Hopkin why the gods are still alive Entering Russell Hoban's writing room in his south London home is a little like wandering into your favourite emporium of second-hand books and records. The floor-to-ceiling shelves are loaded with art monographs, novels, works of mythology and philosophy, with stacks of tapes and videos. It's an archive for the industrious, an endless source of inspiration for the 76-year-old writer, who calls the collection his "exo-brain". Instead, Hoban switched from the pictures to the stories themselves. The Mouse and His Child - "my first novel, though ostensibly for children" - appeared in 1969. He emigrated to London the same year. "I had long been a great admirer of British ghost stories: Sheridan Lefanu, Oliver Onions, Arthur Machen, M R James. And I wanted to spend some time in the city that had figured in their stories." The relocation proved fruitful. "It became the place where novels happened to me. Also, both my German wife and I felt like strangers in the countries we were born in. When we came to London, we felt comfortable being strangers here. We were going to stay for two years; we've been here ever since."

A review by Victoria Strauss
Advertisement Nick takes the puzzle home, and uses the gyroscope to find his way in. The puzzle-world is even stranger than Moe has described, a place "heavy with dread." Odder still, there are people in it: a woman half-seen through the trees of the little would, and Harry Buncher, the schoolyard bully, on the brudge. Harry inside the puzzle-world is just like Harry in real life: he picks a fight with Nick, and manages to smash the gyroscope that is the only way out. Nick is stranded, lost in a bizarre other-reality that may be real or may all be just a figment of his imagination, with no idea of how to extricate himself. The Trokeville Way is a slim book, more novella than novel, but it packs a powerful, creepy punch. The discordant atmosphere of the puzzle-world is compellingly evoked:
