    Jack Hodgins
Born in 1938, Jack Hodgins grew up, as his parents did, in the small town of Merville which is located in the Comox Valley of Vancouver Island. He started writing as a young boy and left home in 1957 to study English literature at the University of British Columbia. There, he took a course in creative writing taught by Earle Birney, an experience which validated his dreams of becoming a published writer. Marrying in 1960 and graduating from UBC with a Bachelor of Education, Hodgins returned with his wife to Vancouver Island where he took a position teaching High School English in Nanaimo, a job he held until 1979. Despite a busy teaching career and family life with his wife and three children, Hodgins still managed to find time to write and submit his works for publication. It was not until 1968, however, that one of his submissions did not elicit a rejection slip. After that first appearance in print, his stories were accepted by a number of publications, including Descant The Capilano Review , and Canadian Forum . This series of successes culminated in 1976 with the publication of his first volume of short stories

Jack Hodgins, author and English professor, has written A Passion for Narrative: A Guide For Writing Fiction in the hopes that he will "no longer receive so many letters from former students requesting class handouts that they have misplaced over the years." While he is quick to acknowledge the difficult task of teaching writing through a book, he states that "his own passion for all aspects of narrative makes it impossible for him to keep his thoughts to himself." It is this passion, which is so evident, that makes this book so successful. Hodgins warns, however, that those who are not "already passionately eager to write fiction" should not read this book, because writing is difficult work. While acknowledging that the writing process is not necessarily linear, Hodgins has arranged his book in a way that brings some kind of sense to the "chaos that is writing fiction." He begins with "Getting Started: Finding Stories Meant for You." The rest of the book is dedicated to discussing such aspects of writing as sentence structure, setting, character, plot, point of new, voice, metaphors, symbols, allusions, and revising. The book is well organized with each section following an established format: each begins with a quote from another source on writing or reading, contains a variety of activities and exercises designed to help the aspiring author develop skills and creativity, and ends with a list of recommended reading.

Left Behind in Squabble Bay is Hodgins' first attempt at writing for children. We are introduced to Alex McGuire who is left with an unsympathetic aunt and uncle for "a couple of years" while his father is off in South America. Through drawing, Alex is able to work out his hurt at being deserted by his father, but it is the drawing that leads to further problems for Alex. One day after he finishes drawing a caricature of everyone in the town with all their imperfections clearly displayed, the picture is found and shown to all the people involved. The rest of the book shows how a misfit can find his own niche by demonstrating his own unique abilities. The text is beautifully complemented by the illustrations of Victor Gad. He captures the essence of the gawky, timid Alex, the wild-haired Frantic Freda and the Top Banana, the other misfit who had been sent out of town for being different.

    HODGINS OPENS STRASBOURG CONFERENCE
Growing appetite for CanLit in Europe
By Mike McNeney Jack Hodgins has some explaining to do as he stands before a group of European academics gathered this weekend (Nov. 13-15) at the University of Strasbourg in France to dissect the "invented traditions" of Canadian, Irish and Scottish literature. The conference focuses on the differences between traditional literature and the stories created outside the so-called centres of the literary world. But Hodgins says a writer's nationality is never as important as the presentation of the story's characters. "I could not write about my characters if I didn't believe that they, like the real people around me, live at the centre of their/my universe, with much in common with people everywhere," Hodgins said before leaving for France. "I will of course, in passing, make reference to the fact that the topic is very Euro-centric." Hodgins will talk and give short readings from his novel-in-progress to explain how research, memory and imagination drive the writing process and how it relates to the conference theme. Hodgins feels conferences that place a writer's work under the academic microscope offer a special kind of feedback, particularly at European events.
