James S. Hogg
James S. Hogg was born March 24, 1851 near Rusk, in east Texas. His birthplace would later give him the distinction of becoming the first native-born governor of Texas. Hogg was orphaned at the age of eleven when his father, a Confederate general, died in May 1862, and his mother died soon afterwards. To help support himself, he worked as a typesetter in a newspaper office at an early age. He later owned his own paper. Meanwhile, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1875. In 1878, Hogg held his first public office when he was elected county attorney of Wood County. He then ran and was elected district attorney for the seventh judicial district. In 1886, Hogg became Attorney-General of the State of Texas, then was re-elected to that post two years later. He easily won the Democratic nomination for governor in 1890, and went on to become governor of Texas from 1891 through 1895. Even among larger-than-life Texans, Hogg was an imposing figure. At six feet two inches and two hundred and eighty five pounds, the feisty governor was a popular advocate of the common citizen and did much to strengthen public respect for law enforcement in general. He sponsored anti-trust legislation and helped establish the powerful Railroad Commission during his tenure as governor. After retiring as governor, Hogg continued an active interest in good government, but held no other public office. He pursued his successful and growing business interests until his death in Houston on March 6, 1906. He is buried in Austin.

Hogg, James
November 1770 - 30 November 1835
Scottish poet, novelist, and short-story writer, Hogg (known in his day as "the Ettrick Shepherd") is in some ways representative of the Romantic phenomenon of the "natural poet," a self-taught writer thought to represent a "naive" or uncorrupted human perspective. While indeed self-taught (Hogg was largely illiterate until he was in his early twenties), Hogg's literary achievements belie some of the stereotypes associated with him. While he at times deliberated cultivated the pose of the natural poet, Hogg's literary sensibilities were acute, and his acquaintance with Sir Walter Scott and involvement in some of Scott's projects helped further develop his talents. (Scott and Hogg would later have a falling out in part on the basis of a disagreement over the literary uses of supernaturalism.) Most famous today for Confessions of a Justified Sinner , Hogg also wrote a number of supernaturalist tales and poems, many of which appeared in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine and which were collected (and poorly revised and edited) in The Shepherd's Calendar

James Hogg, The 'Ettrick Shepherd' (1770-1835) :
Click on image for larger picture James Hogg was the other great poet of the Borders other than Robert Burns, a man of humble birth who taught himself the love of the written word, then in it recorded the events of the land he lived in. He met with others in the 'Tibbie Shiels Inn', kept by a widow. Hogg and his fellows made the inn as much of a place of culture as did Burns his local in Dumfries. James Hogg was born at Ettrick-hall cottage in 1770, his family's poverty making it difficult to get other than the most basic of education. Between 1790 to 1800, James Hogg was a shepherd to James Laidlaw, tenant of the farm of Blackhouse; Laidlaw's son William was for a long time connected with the great Sir Walter Scott, and his home at Abbottsford. Hogg decided to improve himself, discovered a talent for poetry, and composed a number of famous poems and ballads. 'Kilmeny' is probably the most famous, but 'Donald M'Donald' was certainly composed in 1800. Hogg was fond of retelling the old legends of his area. The ballad of 'Mess John' concerned a wizardly priest who bewitched 'Bonny May of Craigieburn', compelling her to visit him once a month. Her cries of despair were the terror of the neighbourhood, until the Covenanters Hab Dab and Davie Din stopped her and shot the priest.

from
Memorials of James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd
edited by his daughter, Mrs. Garden, Alexander Gardner, London, 1887. James Hogg was perhaps the most remarkable man that ever wore the maud of a shepherd. Under the garb, aspect, and bearing of a rude peasant (and rude enough he was in most of these things, even after no inconsiderable experience of society), the world soon discovered a true poet. He taught himself to write, by copying the letters of a printed book as he lay watching his flock on the hillside, and believed that he had reached the utmost pitch of his ambition when he first found that his artless rhymes could touch the heart of the ewe-milker who partook the shelter of his mantle during the passing storm. If 'the shepherd' of Professor Wilson's Noctes Ambrosianae may be taken as a true portrait of James Hogg, we must admit that, for quaintness of humour, the poet of Ettrick Forest had few rivals. Sir Walter Scott said that Hogg's thousand little touches of absurdity afforded him more entertainment than the best comedy that ever set the pit in a roar. Among the written productions of the shepherd-poet, is an account of his own experiences in sheep-tending, called 'The Shepherd's Calender.' This work contains a vast amount of useful information upon sheep, their diseases, habits, and management. The Ettrick Shepherd died in 1835.

Psalms of David, and, when he obtained access to The Life and Adventures of Sir William Wallace and The Gentle Shepherd, One may think [he writes], on reading over this memoir, that I have worn out a life of misery and wretchedness; but the case has been quite the reverse. I never knew either man or woman who has been so universally happy as I have been; which has been partly owing to a good constitution, and partly from the conviction that a heavenly gift, conferring the powers of immortal song, was inherent in my soul.
