Book Description In the claustrophobic, mannered world of British India, Linny Ingram seems the perfect society wife: pretty, gracious, subservient. But appearances can be deceptive. Linny Ingram was born Linny Gow, an orphan raised in the gray slums of Liverpool. Sold into prostitution by her stepfather when she was only eleven, Linny clung to the belief that she was meant for something more, something better, than life on the cold, dangerous streets.

    Review by Dave Jenkinson. excerpt:
And this night, the last one before she arrived in her new country, to her new life, Rosetta held the light even more tightly as she gently eased her body away from Flora's and climbed overhead to her own bunk. "We won't be Home girls any more," she whispered, pulling the scratchy blanket over her shoulders. "No one will ever call me a Home girl again. We'll start a new life, the two of us. A new family. We won't be Home girls. While Barbara Haworth-Attard's Home Child (Roussan, 1996) also dealt with the same general historical happening, the time setting of her novel was later, 1914, and the transplanted orphan was a 13-year-old boy, Arthur. Of the two books, Holeman's Promise Song has the stronger reader impact as Haworth-Attard elected to tell Arthur's story not from his perspective but rather that of one of the children on the farm to which Arthur had been sent.

Poignant, tender, haunting and raw, these ten stories share not only emotional qualities and theme, but also exquisite voice. This historical fiction provides a realistic look at the grim world of laborers in England during the early Industrial Age, as the decline of Emmaline Roke's family's fortunes is traced over a six-year period in 1860s England. Cat, Emmaline's mother, has just mangled her hand in a horrible factory accident. The story then backtracks six years to tell the journey of this family from their idyllic existence as shopkeepers in a village to the tragic circumstances of Cat's accident.
