Gerard Manley Hopkins (July 28, 1844 – June 8, 1889) was a British Victorian poet and Jesuit priest. Hopkins sought and struggled to unite his spiritual yearnings with his love of poetry, and the resulting verse is some of the most unique in the language. Hopkins struggled to reveal what he called the "inscape" of ordinary things—the hidden world within the world, what William Blake elsewhere would call "infinity in a grain of sand / and eternity in an hour"—and the resulting poems are charged with wild, almost incantatory power that are unlike anything else in English literature. His poems are best understood when read aloud.

Life
Hopkins was born in Stratford, Essex, as the eldest of nine children of Catherine and Manley Hopkins, who was an insurance agent and consul-general for Hawaii based in London. Gerard Hopkins was educated at Highgate grammar school and then Balliol College, Oxford, where he studied classics. At Oxford he forged the friendship with Robert Bridges that would become important not only to Hopkins development as a poet but also to his posthumous acclaim. Although Hopkins began his time at Oxford as a keen socializer and prolific poet, something about his own youthful behavior alarmed him so much that he became devoutly studious and began to record his sins obsessively in his diary. In 1866, following the example of John Henry Newman, Hopkins converted from

Gerard Manley Hopkins
Jesuit and poet, born at Stratford, near London , 28 July, 1844; died at Dublin , 8 June, 1889. His early education was received at Cholmondeley School, Highgate, where he gave evidence of fine intellectual endowments, scholarly tastes, and poetical gifts above the ordinary. The numerous conversions from Anglicanism to the Catholic Church in the middle of the nineteenth century together with the spirit of the Oxford Movement were not without their effect on the young student, and in October, 1866, he was received into the Church . In the following year he entered Balliol College, Oxford , having been prepared for his classical course by Walter Pater. Very soon his religious vocation manifested itself and he left the university, going to the Birmingham Oratory, where he spent a short time with Father Newman . In 1868 he entered the Society of Jesus . After ordination he was sent to Liverpool where his work lay among the poor of the slums of that city. His next post was that of preacher in London , after which he was stationed at St. Aloysius' Church

Biography
English poet and Jesuit priest, one of the most individual of Victorian writers and one of the great unsung poets, virtually unknown in his lifetime. Gerard Manley Hopkins’ ornate poetry expresses a Victorian sentimentality, but also a startling musicality ahead of its time. Hopkins was the eldest of nine children, the son of an Anglican, former British consul general in Hawaii and marine insurance adjuster who had published a volume of verse the year before his son’s birth. First showing his lifetime feel for words, the boy won a poetry prize when still in grammar school. He continued writing poetry while studying the classics at Oxford, which he attended on a grant in 1863. With the Oxford Movement renewing interest in the relationships between Anglicanism and Roman Catholicism, he joined the Catholic Church, even while struggling with his sexual attractions toward young male friends at Oxford, as he wrote in his diaries of 1865. Entering the Society of Jesus in 1868, he burned his youthful verses, determining "to write no more, as not belonging to my profession." He did retain a journal up to 1885 in which he kept a record of his vivid responses to nature and his philosophy of "inscape" that emphasized the individuality of every natural thing. In 1874, Hopkins began studying theology and Welsh at a College in North Wales, and resumed writing poetry.
