“Went down to Leadville from Matchless – the snow so terrible, I had to go down on my hands and knees and creep from my cabin door to 7th Street. Mr. Zaitz driver drove me to our get off place and he helped pull me to the cabin. I kept falling deep down through the snow every minute. God bless him.” ···· “ Baby Doe” Tabor, March, 1935 On March 7, 1935, Baby Doe Tabor was found dead of a heart attack in her small shack at the famous Matchless Mine, just outside Leadville, Colorado. She had, for whatever reason, adopted the storage shack at the Matchless Mine as her living quarters since her husband's death in 1899, 35 years earlier. Contrary to popular belief, she did not "hold on to the Matchless as it will pay millions again," as some have incorrectly reported were Horace Tabor's deathbed words. The Matchless Mine had long since been lost to foreclosure and had failed to produce even with several new attempts on the part of the new owners. Baby Doe was living in the tiny cabin only due to the generosity of the current owners of the worthless mine. Elizabeth Bonduel McCourt “Baby Doe” Tabor, once a millionaire, had died in virtual poverty. After her death, 17 iron trunks that had been placed in storage in Denver were opened, as well as several gunny sacks and 4 trunks that had been left at the St. Vincent’s Hospital in Leadville. All that was left from the Tabor fortune were several bolts of unique, untouched and quite exquisite cloth, several pieces of china, a tea service and some jewelry, including a diamond and sapphire ring. The famous watch fob and chain given to her husband, Horace Tabor, at the opening of the $700,000 Tabor Opera House in Denver was also found, along with several memorabilia pieces.

photographer unknown Horace Austin Warner Tabor born: November 26th, 1830
Holland, Vermont died: April 10th, 1899
Denver, Colorado Stonemason, farmer, prospector, postmaster, merchant, politician.
Early in 1857 he returned to Maine in order to marry Augusta Pierce and bring her back to Kansas. They spent the next two years trying to make the farm productive, but succumbed to the stories of gold being discovered in the extreme western part of the Kansas Territory (now Colorado), finally leaving Deep Creek in the spring of 1859, to walk to Denver via the Republican River trail. They were accompanied by Sam Kellogg and Nathaniel Maxcy, two friends from Maine, the latter of whom had been present at the birth of and gave his name to their son Maxcy, who was by then not even two years old. It took them six weeks of struggle across a barely explored landscape; "the acme of barrenness and desolation," according to Horace Greeley, who took the same route barely a month after the Tabors.
For the next twenty years the Tabors foraged for riches among the mining camps of the eastern slope of the Continental Divide; at places called Payne's Bar , Oro City 1, California Gulch, Buckskin Joe and Oro City 2. Typically, Augusta would board, bake for and minister to the miners, while "HAW" tried his luck at placer sluicing or some other means of getting at the precious minerals that lay all around. Mostly, he was Augusta's partner in keeping store and in running the post office and bank for the various camps; "sturdy merchants," beloved for their honesty and generosity.

grammaticus Orbilius. He then studied literature and philosophy in Athens. In 44 B.C., he became a staff officer in Brutus' army. He fought in the battle of Philippi in 42 B.C., where Marc Antony and Octavian (later Augustus) defeated the forces of Brutus. Horace claimed to have fled from the battle, leaving his shield behind. As a result of the defeat, his military career was over and he lost his family's estate. Augustus offered amnesty to the defeated soldiers, and Horace moved to Rome where he worked as a clerk in the Treasury. It is unclear whether he wrote poems before this time, but he turned now to writing with the hope of receiving recognition and patronage. He became friends first with the poets Virgil and Varius, and in around 38 B.C. with Maecenas, who was an advisor to Augustus. Horace first published his

Horace Walpole:Historic Doubts on the
Life and Reign of
King Richard the Third
Horace Walpole is the most famous of Richard III's defenders. His Historic Doubts on the Life and Reign of King Richard the Third, published in 1768, is a landmark in the Ricardian controversy. Because the entire work would require considerable downloading time, this hypertext edition has been divided into four parts, with Walpole's footnotes in a fifth file. Walpole did not divide his work into chapters; the divisions are therefore fairly arbitrary.
