Why John Hughes Still Matters
We run down a few of the reasons why the late writer/producer/director inspired a touching Oscars tribute.
By Susannah Gora Text Size Decrease Increase These films permanently changed how Hollywood makes and markets teen movies, but more than that, they made a great sociological impact, changing the way many young people think about everything from love and friendship to sex, class distinction, fashion and music. As the author of a new book about Hughes and his films (among others), I've spent the last few years immersed in John Hughes's world, interviewing the people who worked with him (including actors like Molly Ringwald, Matthew Broderick, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy) and loved him. And through this process, which had largely been completed by the time of his death, I've been reminded, again and again, of just how much John Hughes matters. There are many reasons why this is so, but here are a few that I think are the most important: He took teens and their problems seriously.

John Hughes captured an adolescence to be learned from instead of suffered through and forgotten, where parents and their teenagers tried to do right, even though they couldn t always do good, and, in the end, understood that We Are Not Alone.

Email This I began writing this article within minutes of hearing the news that John Hughes passed away unexpectedly this afternoon, and I'm still reeling a bit, more than I had anticipated. Like most movie fans of my generation, I first heard of him in the summer of 1983, when two movies he'd written, Mr. Mom and National Lampoon's Vacation , were released within a week of each other. I saw both, smiling at Mr. Mom and laughing hard throughout Vacation . The following year, Sixteen Candles , his directorial debut, hit theaters, and he was off to the races. Hughes was a prolific writer and a busy producer throughout the 80s and 90s, leaving his personal stamp on dozens of projects, not to mention the eight films that he personally directed. He mined his suburban Midwestern teenage territory thoroughly, leaving no awkward, class-conscious, embarrassing, financially slighted, pretty in pink, uncomfortable stone unturned. He left behind so many memorable movie moments that it would be a foolhardy project for me to try and list them all, but here are seven of his greatest, listed chronologically. National Lampoon's Vacation
Hughes expanded his own short story into an epic road trip, as the Griswold family heads west from Chicago on a "quest for fun" to Walley World. Along the way, they endure annoying relatives, smelly Aunt Edna, and a dog that becomes a drag. Oh, and Dad tries skinny dipping with a supermodel. The clip that seems most emblematic of their travails comes late in the picture, as Mom and the kids start complaining again, until Dad finally loses it. Hughes was an expert at using the "f-word" (and other profanity) to great comedic effect. [Watch clip after the jump.]

John Hughes: The soundtrack to a generation
pm A great teen movie needs a soundtrack. Youth is captured better in song than on film, and behind every brain, athlete, basket case, princess or a criminal is a score. John Hughes knew how to find it. But if the boomers had Woodstock, Generation X had John Hughes. Simple Minds' "Don't You Forget About Me."  Too often, soundtracks for mainstream films are little more than advertisements for record labels quick, name three songs from 1999's "American Pie." But Hughes was one to carefully sculpt mix tapes to accompany his pictures. Simple Minds may have had a following in the U.K. long before Hughes put them in "The Breakfast Club," but they were on the fringes of youth culture in America before the 1985 film was released.  This is why the song worked. It didn't matter if one was a fan of Simple Minds' four and a half minutes of synth rock romanticism battle lines are drawn over music when one is a teen it captured a moment, and a movement. After the release of "The Breakfast Club," the song shot to the top of the charts, and to this day remains a symbol of teen films.
But "The Breakfast Club" wasn't where Hughes set the precedent for intertwining music into his films. Though not represented on the soundtrack, the music in "Sixteen Candles" captured a range of teenage emotions. Recklessness?

Maybe the most famous movie lip-sync ever. Ferris Bueller (an impish, fresh-faced Matthew Broderick) twists and shouts on a parade float, and all of Chicago joins in.
Pretty in Pink . Jon Cryer wins over Ringwald—and every girl, ever, in the history of girlkind—with this endearing lip-sync of Otis Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness." You got to! Aside from the racial faux pas that was an exchange student named Long Duk Dong (see below), Sixteen Candles pitch-perfectly captured teen angst. "This information can not leave this room, OK? It would devastate my reputation as a dude.
