Zora Neale Hurston an early twentieth century Afro-American feminist author, was raised in a predominately black community. That gave her an unique perspective on race relations , evident in her novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God . Hurston drew on her own experiences as a feminist Afro-American female, to create a story about the magical transformation of Janie from a young unconfident girl to a thriving woman. Janie experiences many things, making her a compelling character who takes readers along as her companion on her voyage to discover the mysteries and rewards life has to offer. Zora Neale Hurston was the daughter of a Baptist minister and an educated scholar who still believed in the genius contained within the common southern black vernacular (Hook http://splavc.spjc.cc.fl.us/hooks/Zora.html). She was a woman who found her place, though unstable, in a typically male profession. Hurston was born January 7, 1891, in Eatonville, Florida, the first all-incorporated black town in America. When Hurston was thirteen she was removed from school and sent to care for her brother's children. She became a member of a traveling theater at the age of sixteen, and then found herself working as a maid for a white woman. This woman saw the spark that was waiting for fuel, and arranged for Hurston to attend high school in Baltimore. She also attended Morgan Academy (now called Morgan State University) from which she graduated in June of 1918. She then enrolled in the Howard

Illustrated by Miguel Covarrubias. Fine in near fine dustwrapper, with very slight tanning on the spine, a couple of small and faint splash marks on the spine, and some folds professionally repaired. The author's second book, a collection of Negro folk tales collected by Hurston in Florida. Because of the stiff and brittle paper employed in the construction of the jacket, this is the scarcest of Hurston's books to find in fine condition. It is seldom found intact, and when it is found is invariably chipped. This is easily the nicest copy we've seen. Hurston, Zora Neale
(b . Jan. 7, 1903, Eatonville, Fla., U.S.d. Jan. 28, 1960, Fort Pierce, Fla.), American folklorist and writer associated with the Harlem Renaissance who celebrated black culture of the rural South. At age 16, Hurston joined a traveling theatrical company, ending up in New York City during the Harlem Renaissance. She studied anthropology with Franz Boas at Columbia University, taking a scientific approach to ethnicity. As an ethnologist, Hurston traveled to Haiti to study voodoo. She ultimately rejected the conventional viewpoint of the scholar in favour of personal involvement with her heritage. In 1931 she collaborated with Langston Hughes on a play, Mule Bone: A Comedy of Negro Life in Three Acts. Her second novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), was both widely acclaimed and highly controversial. It was criticized by blacks because, although Hurston refused to endorse the myth of black inferiority, neither did she portray blacks as victims of this myth. The tone of Hurston's work is celebratory, rooted in a rural black South reminiscent of her hometown, Eatonville. Her characters act freely within their rich heritage and narrow social position. Hurston influenced such later black authors as Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison. Her autobiography is titled

Brief Profile

(b.Jan. 7, 1891?, Notasulga, Ala.-d.Jan. 28, 1960, Fort Pierce, Fla.) Zora Neale Hurston, novelist, folklorist, and anthropologist, was much responsible for the Harlem Renaissance being the watershed event in black America as delineated through literature that it was. Despite that she would later fall into disrepute because of her rigid views about civil rights, her earthy lyrical writing which lionized southern black culture has influenced generations of black American literary figures. Upon reaching adulthood Zora was working as a domestic, still leading an itinerant life, with little schooling. She was in Baltimore in 1917, when through the aid of her employer she entered in Morgan Academy (the high school division of Morgan College (now Morgan State University). Though twenty-six years old at enrollment, she listed her age as sixteen and 1901 as the date of her birth. With her graduation in 1918, she matriculated at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Here she was inspired by the professor of philosophy and authority on black culture Alain Locke and decided to pursue a literary career. In 1921, her first short story "John Redding Goes to Sea" that was set in Eatonville was published in the Howard literary magazine The Stylus . In the following years she contributed several more stories to various magazines. One of these "Spunk" was published in the black journal
