Aldous Huxley
Aldous Huxley was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, graduating in 1915 with honors in English literature. Joining the staff of the Atheneum , he wrote brilliant social and political satires and essays on many subjects, exploring the relationship between the individual and society. Brave New World (1932) is his best-known satire about a sinister Utopia of conditioned happiness. Huxley's other writings include Eyeless in Gaza After Many a Summer Time Must Have a Stop Ape and Essence The Doors of Perception Heaven and Hell, and Island (1962). His later works moved through mysticism and hallucinogens into a spiritual direction. The essay in the text, from Brave New World Revisited (1958) shows how the Nazis conditioned the thoughts and behaviors of the masses through language and various techniques.

Jump to: navigation search Previous (Alder) Next (Alec Guinness) Aldous Huxley Aldous Leonard Huxley (July 26, 1894 – November 22, 1963) was a British American writer and moral philosopher and is in certain circles regarded as one of the greatest voices of the twentieth century. Wrote Australian writer and acquaintance, Clive James, “Godlike in his height, aquiline features, and omnidirectional intelligence, Huxley was a living myth.” An enduring opponent of the moral decadence of modern culture, Huxley sought through both fiction and non-fiction writing to denounce conformity and the orthodox attitudes of his time (particularly of Western societies) as well as to instill a sense of conscientiousness and outward responsibility in the public. Best known for his novels and essays, Huxley functioned as an examiner and sometimes critic of social mores, societal norms, and ideals. While his earlier concerns might be called “humanist,” ultimately, he became quite interested in “spiritual” subjects such as parapsychology and philosophical mysticism.

Aldous HuxleyL.A. Writer Aldous Huxley was one of the seminal figures of 20th century literature. Born in England in 1894, he was the grandson of Thomas Huxley, the biologist who influenced Darwin, and the great nephew of Matthew Arnold.
At Eton, Huxley was stricken with a rare virus that left him blind in one eye and with little vision in the other. Undeterred, Huxley taught himself to read Braillereading Macaulay in Braille was slow going, he later saidgraduated from Eton and won a scholarship to Oxford where he took a First in Greats.
Although Huxley's eye condition exempted him from combat, he registered as a conscientious objector during World War I and did alternative service sawing and clearing brush on an estate near Oxford. He met and married his first wife, Maria Nys, a Belgian refugee.
Huxley's near blindness prevented him from studying medicine, and he turned to fiction. In the 1920s he turned out a string of novels Crome Yellow Antic Hay Point Counterpoint that were thinly disguised portraits of post-war English society. Huxley's writing satirized the disillusionment (and decadence) of the upper classes whose world had been turned upside down by the Great War.

    Biography of Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)
Study Guides and Essays by Aldous Huxley Brave New World Aldous Huxley Aldous Leonard Huxley was born on July 26, 1894 in Surrey, England, as the third son of Dr. Leonard Huxley and Julia Arnold. Huxley was born into a long line of scientists and intellectuals. His grandfather Thomas Henry Huxley had the nickname “Darwin's Bulldog” for his fierce defense of evolutionary science and for his passion for teaching Victorian scientific advancements to Britain's working classes. Aldous Huxley was also related to the poet Matthew Arnold on his mother's side of the family. These two disciplines, literature and science, converged at the end of the Victorian era and characterize Huxley's own career and ambitions as an author, journalist, and humanist. Educated at Eton, Aldous Huxley was forced to leave the school at the age of seventeen due to an affliction of the eyes. He was partially blind for two or three years and therefore was unable to complete the rigorous scientific training he had undertaken. Though problems with his eyes would remain with him for the rest of his life, Huxley was able to attend Oxford where he received a degree in English literature. Huxley's career began in journalism and included music and artistic criticism as well as book reviews. He also began writing poems, essays, and historical pieces. Huxley's first introduction to British intellectual society occurred while working as a farm laborer at Garsington Manor, the site of the “Bloomsbury Society,” a group of public intellectuals that included Bertrand Russell. There he would marry Maria Nys and they would have one child, Matthew Huxley. He also wrote his first book, a volume of poetry called

Biography
British writer and novelist who is famed for his sophisticated and witty works. Two of his more famous works include "Point Counter Point," 1928 and "Brave New World," 1932. He was the grandson of scientist Thomas Huxley and the brother of Julian Huxley. Tall and fine-looking, he had a troubled childhood which included the early death of his mother, the suicide of an adored elder brother and virtual blindness as a result of an untreated eye infection. Nonetheless, he took first-class honors at Oxford, having studied mostly by Braille. During his life Aldous explored parapsychology, mysticism, Indian religions, spiritualism, Theosophy, Dianetics and, in 1953, psychedelic drugs. His wife Maria died in 1955. A year later he married musician Laura Achera, born November 2, 1911 (according to her New York Times obituary). He died of cancer on 11/22/1963, Hollywood, CA. Five years later Laura Huxley, his wife of seven years, published her memoir, “This Timeless Moment: A Personal View of Aldous Huxley." She died in Los Angeles December 12, 2007, age 96, of cancer.

Huxley, Aldous – Jacob’s Hands (with Christopher Isherwood)
Huxley, Aldous
British, 1894–1963
This hybrid form serves as a means for exploring what he called Proper Studies (1927), namely those dealing with the human being. This series of essays addresses some of his most puzzling themes, ideas that constantly resurfaced in his early attempts at writing poetry, short histories, and drama, through his travelogues, novels, and social and critical essays on painting, art, architecture, ecology, and mysticism. As a 20th– century writer, he was especially concerned with the education of the human being as an “amphibian” (one capable of living in different environments), an epithet he applied to himself.
Huxley’s concerns about the power of science and technology mainly reflect on the damage they could eventually inflict on humans and nature. This view would lead him to swing repeatedly between dystopian and utopian conceptions for the society of his day, especially following World War II, conceptions that motivated his will to synthesize both philosophical and cultural views around the well-being of humanity. This can be gathered, for instance, from his collection of essays in Ends and Means (1937), his philosophical work The Perennial Philosophy (1944), his last and only utopian novel Island (1962), and his posthumous essayistic piece Literature and Science (1963). From reading these works, it is understandable that he should consider himself a Pyrrhonist (skeptical philosopher) and why his entire production can be equally considered biographical, a natural feature of the essay, and one that accounts for the confessional tone of the author.

On vacation from school, Denis goes to stay at Crome, an English country house inhabited by several of Huxley's most outlandish charactersfrom Mr. Barbecue-Smith, who writes 1,500 publishable words an hour by "getting in touch" with his "subconscious," to Henry Wimbush, who is obsessed with writing the definitive "History of Crome" . Denis's stay proves to be a disaster after his weak attempts to attract the girl of his dreams, and endures the ridicule regarding his plan to write a novel about love and art. Lambasting the post-Victorian standards of morality, Crome Yellow is a witty masterpiece that, in F. Scott Fitzgerald's words, "is too ironic to be called satire and too scornful to be called irony."

A Visionary Masterpiece

Product Rating: Pros: Prophetic Visionary Classic Novel
Cons: None
markantony's Full Review: Huxley, Aldous Genetic manipulation is no longer a fantasy of science fiction but a reality slowing invading our 21st century lives. Huxley understood advancing technology absent of the restraint of ethical consideration would pose grave consequences for society-at-large. "Brave New World" is Huxley's warning to this planet to refrain from weeding out the humanity of our existence through mechanical efficiency or ideological fanaticism.
"Brave New World", though written 16 years before "1984" is actually a political sister book to that terrifying vision that did come true with the crimes of the Soviet Stalinist regime. Both books stress the total control that is required by dictatorships. In "Brave New World" dissent is squashed by flooding the masses with "freedoms" like drugs and unrestricted sex while populating the society with genetic underclasses grown in a test-tube factory. Basically you were conceived to be a janitor and that is all you will ever be. Huxley's homeland of England, most likely gave him a few ideas in this direction, due to its class-obsessed society.
