Pros: Thought-provoking Cons: writing style is weird In this book, Huxley paints a dark picture of a post-World War 3 in which the majority worship Satan. The whole story is told in the form of a movie screenplay, which at times is distracting. Huxley points out that the human race blindly jumps after...

British novelist and essayist. Born in Surrey, England. He studied in Eton; Balliol College, Oxford (studying English; the rapid deterioration of his eyesight at 16 ruled out a hoped-for scientific career). After emigrating to the States, he turned his hand to screenwriting (adapting Pride and Prejudice, with Laurence Olivier, as well as working on versions of Jane Eyre and Alice in Wonderland). Huxley said of LA, "Thought is barred in this City of Dreadful Joy and conversation is unknown. Huxley's close friend Gerald Herd said that his elite ancestry "brought down on him a weight of intellectual authority and a momentum of moral obligations". Burgess described Huxley as giving the novel a brain, and he is widely seen as an ideas-merchant who chose to use the novel form (his later work became increasingly didactic). He genre-hopped throughout, from his first novel, the proto-Waugh cynical country-house satire Crome Yellow, to SF morality tale, Dystopia, and finally the unusual form of genuine utopia (The Island is his sincere recipe for a perfect society). The Doors of Perception confirmed his status among students of hallucinogens: mescaline "is without any question the most extraordinary and significant experience available to human beings this side of the Beatific Vision".

Aldous (Leonard) Huxley (1894-1963) English novelist and critic, grandson of the prominent biologist T.H. Huxley (see further below) and brother of Julian Huxley, also a biologist. Aldous Huxley's production was wide. Besides novels he published travel books, histories, poems, plays, and essays on philosophy, arts, sociology, religion and morals. Among Huxley's best known novels is BRAVE NEW WORLD (1932), which is one of the classical works of science fiction along with George Orwell 's Nineteen-Eighty-Four "Half of the human race lives in manifest obedience to the lunar rhythm; and there is evidence to show that the psychological and therefore the spiritual life, not only of women, but of men too, mysteriously ebbs and flows with the changes of the moon. There are unreasoned joys, inexplicable miseries, laughters and remorses without a cause. Their sudden and fantastic alternations constitute the ordinary weather of our minds. These moods, of which the more gravely numinous may be hypostasized as gods, the lighter, if we will, as hobgoblins and fairies, are the children of the blood and humours. But the blood and humours obey, among many other masters, the changing moon. Touching the soul directly through the eyes and, indirectly, along the dark channels of the blood, the moon is doubly a divinity." (from 'Meditations of the Moon' in

HUXLEY, Aldous Island Brave New World . Huxley began exploring Eastern religions and mysticism in the 1930s, after he had written Brave New World; in the early 1950s he experimented with mescaline and other psychedelic drugs, finding a strong parallel between the drug-induced state and the mystical experiences he had previously only read about. He wrote two short books on his drug experiences The Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell describing the psychedelic experience in terms borrowed from oriental mystical traditions, and attempted in this, his final work of fiction, to use the novel form to articulate a vision of the society that could emerge from a shared experience of spiritual ecstasy. Publication date rubber-stamped on front cover. Spine slanted, lightened and lightly creased; overall near fine in wrappers. Not a particularly uncommon book, but scarce in proof form. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted. See more items by HUXLEY, Aldous
