Hypatia of Alexandria: Defender of Reason
by Jim Haldenwang
written April 7, 2008
revised May 29, 2008 Who was Hypatia? She was the last great Greek teacher, philosopher, mathematician, and scientist of antiquity. She devoted her life to defending and preserving the great Greek tradition of rational thought. Her cruel murder in 415 AD marked the end of humanitys first Age of Reason and the beginning of the Dark Ages. Her lifes work may have helped to spark the Renaissance and the second Age of Reason. Here I will present what little is known of her life, and why she may have been one of historys most influential figures.
The 5 th century Christian historian Socrates Scholasticus (c. 379 c. 450 AD) said of Hypatia, "There was a woman at Alexandria named Hypatia, daughter of the philosopher Theon, who made such attainments in literature and science, as to far surpass all the philosophers of her own time" ( Scholasticus , c. 439, VII, xv). By the time of Theon, who lived in the 4 th century AD, the only surviving building of the Library complex may have been the "Mouseion" or Museum (the "Temple of the Muses," from which we get the modern word "museum.") The Museum appears to have been a research institute, perhaps the worlds first. It was in the Museum where Theon probably worked as a distinguished mathematician and scholar. It is not known exactly when Hypatia was born. The dates commonly given are between 350 and 370 AD (

Egyptian Neoplatonist philosopher who was the first notable woman in mathematics. The daughter of Theon, also a notable mathematician and philosopher, Hypatia became the recognized head of the Neoplatonist school of philosophy at Alexandria about 400, and her eloquence, modesty, and beauty, combined with her remarkable intellectual gifts, attracted a large number of pupils. Among them was Synesius of Cyrene, afterward bishop of Ptolemais ( c. 410), several of whose letters to her are still extant. Hypatia lectured on mathematics and on the philosophical teachings of two Neoplatonists: Plotinus ( c. CE ), the founder of Neoplatonism, and Iamblichus ( c. CE ), the founder of the Syrian branch of Neoplatonism. She symbolized learning and science, which at that time in Western history were largely identified with paganism. This left Hypatia in a precarious situation. Theodosius I, Roman emperor in the East from 379 to 392 and then emperor in both the East and West until 395, initiated an official policy of intolerance to paganism and Arianism in 380. In 391, in reply to Theophilus, the bishop of Alexandria, he gave permission to destroy Egyptian religious institutions. Christian mobs obliged by destroying the Library of Alexandria, the Temple of Serapis, and other pagan monuments. Although legislation in 393 sought to curb violence, particularly the looting and destruction of Jewish synagogues, a renewal of disturbances occurred after the accession of Cyril to the patriarchate of Alexandria in 412. Tension culminated in the forced, albeit illegal, expulsion of Alexandrian Jews in 414 and the murder of Hypatia, the most prominent Alexandrian pagan, by a fanatical mob of Christians in 415. The departure soon afterward of many scholars marked the beginning of the decline of Alexandria as a major centre of ancient learning.

HYPATIA
Natural Philosopher (355? - 415 CE) She is one of the more romantic figures in science. She was the daughter of Theon, a mathematician who taught at the great school at the Alexandrine Library. She traveled widely and corresponded with people all over the Mediterranean. We know of her only through her letters because all of her work was destroyed when the Great Library of Alexandia was destroyed. She taught at the school in the Library in Alexandria, Egypt. Letters written and addressed simply to the philosopher were delivered to her. She taught mathematics and natural philosophy. She is credited with the authorship of three major treatises on geometry and algebra and one on astronomy. She invented several tools: an instrument for distilling water, an instrument to measure the specific gravity of water, an astrolabe and a planisphere. She died violently. She was dragged to her death by a mob who pulled her from her classroom into the streets where they peeled her to death with oyster shells. She wrote that All formal dogmatic religions are fallacious and must never be accepted by self-respecting persons as final.

    Hypatia Woman Philosopher of Alexandria
    By N.S. Gill , About.com Guide
    See More About:
Elbert Hubbard, "Hypatia", in Little Journeys to the Homes of Great Teachers, v.23 #4, East Aurora, New York : The Roycrofters, 1908 PD Courtesy of Wikipedia zSB(3,3) You almost expect to hear: "she was a fine philosopher for a woman " when hearing about ancient female prodigies. After all, our predecessors' opportunities, especially if they were "respectable" women, were nearly non-existent.
Hypatia, however, defies all such qualifiers.
    Hypatia's Accomplishments
Hypatia was, simply, the last great Alexandrian mathematician and philosopher. By writing a commentary on The Conics of Apollonius of Perga which divided cones into sections by a plane, Hypatia made geometry intelligible to her students and ultimately transmissible. Since men thronged to hear her ideas on philosophy, she taught

Hypatia Baldwin, Stanley E. Charles Kingsley (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1934).

This is a book length treatment of Kingsley's life and works. After chapters providing a brief biography, a discussion of the background of the novels, and a consideration of the influence of Carlyle and Maurice, Baldwin devotes separate chapters to each of the novels: Yeast, Alton Locke, Two Years Ago, Hypatia, Westward Ho!, and Hereward the Wake . Baldwin is measured in his assessment, though he still finds much to praise in Kingsley's diverse literary endeavors. Nevertheless, he considers Kingsley the man as more prominent than his literature. "Some men's writings are the greatest part of them, and posterity studies their lives through a spirit of curiosity excited by their works. In a sense this is true of Kingsley, but in a truer sense many are reading Kingsley's literary works because of the indelible impression his personality made upon his fellow men, for whom, in all his activities, he labored. His life in itself was a poem of deep lyric passion" (194).
