A focus on her role as a mathematician. Bibliotheca Alexandria
The library of Alexandria is being rebuilt! Monitor the progress and read the history. Hypatia She was a learned philosopher, a creative mathematician, and a popular teacher. Those talents led to her being condemed as a witch and murdered in 415 . Working with her father Theon, a mathematician and keeper of the Great Library of Alexandria, Hypatia contributed to a commentary on Ptolemy's astronomy and a new version of Euclid's Elements (the basic text in the history of geometry.) She is known to have been a neo-platonist following the school of thought developed by Plotinus and derived from Plato . None of Hypatia's or Theon's works survived the burning of the Great Library. Science writer Carl Sagan aptly summarized the significance of the Great Library of Alexandria and the role of Hypatia in the following passage his book Cosmos "Only once before in our history was there the promise of a brilliant scientific civilization. Beneficiary of the Ionian Awakening, it had its citadel at the Library of Alexandria, where 2,000 years ago the best minds of antiquity established the foundations for the systematic study of mathematics, physics, biology, astronomy, literature, geography and medicine. We build on those foundations still. The Library was constructed and supported by the Ptolemys, the Greek kings who inherited the Egyptian portion of the empire of Alexander the Great. From the time of its creation in the third century B.C. until its destruction seven centuries later, it was the brain and heart of the ancient world.

The first is the 30 Day book meme, now that I've finally found a list of all the prompts . I am not commiting to 30 continuous days. Day 1 - A book series you wish had gone on longer OR a book series you wish would just freaking end already (or both!) I'm ready for the ending of Isobelle Carmody's Obernewtyn Chronicles . There are actually only five books to date (six in the USA, where the fifth book was split in two), and apparently only one more to come (again, two in the USA). But it started in 1987! I started reading it in about 1994 or so. Every book since has been supposed to be the last one. And it's ultimately only one large plot arc, and thus very little has actually been wrapped up. Most of the subplots are still unravelling too.

The massive destruction of the contents of the Library of Alexandria by Christians during the reign of Christian Emperor Theodosius in 391 C.E. is only a small part of the suppression and elimination of scientific and historical truth. During these years the writings and works of many remarkable women were destroyed, allowed to be lost, or deliberately eradicated; only hints remain, a verse here, a few sentences there. Most of the works of Hypatia were ravaged as well, but her story lives on. How it must have pained her, 21 years old, watching the destruction of the Great Library, a half million tomes representing the finest minds in the ancient world. Hand written, these documents were irreplaceable; the knowledge lost, the history destroyed and eliminated, was a devastating setback. It was also precursor to the dark ages , a time when only the church fathers retained knowledge. What audacity the church had, claiming the role of preserver of ancient knowledge when the only knowledge they preserved was that which they chose not to destroy. And each loss to the world was a personal tragedy...

Done into a book by the Roycrofters at their shops in East Aurora, Erie County, New York page 270 Neo-platonism is a progressive philosophy, and does not expect to state final conditions to men whose minds are finite. Life is an unfoldment, and the further we travel the more truth we can comprehend. To understand the things that are at our door is the best preparation for understanding those that lie beyond. - Hypatia

page 271 The father of Hypatia was Theon, a noted mathematician and astronomer of Alexandria. He would have been regarded as a very great man had he not been cast into the shadow by his daughter. Let male parents beware. At that time, astronomy and astrology were one. Mathematics was useful, not for purposes of civil engineering, but principally in figuring out where a certain soul, born under a given planet, would be at a certain time in the future. No information comes to us about the mother of Hypatia - she was so busy with her housework that her existence is a matter of assumption or a priori reasoning; thus, given a daughter, we assume the existence of a mother. Hypatia was certainly the daughter of her father. He was her tutor, teacher, playmate. All he knew he taught to her, and before she was twenty she had been informed by him of a fact which she had previously guessed - that considerable of his so-called knowledge was conjecture.

Hypatia Sans Pro was conceived in the fall of 2002, when Adobe's Thomas Phinney (now product manager for fonts and global typography) noted that the Adobe Originals collection did not include a geometric sans serif. Under the guidance and tutelage of Robert Slimbach , Adobe principal type designer, Phinney developed his concept into a font family over the next four and a half years. In the final stages of the project, Slimbach teamed with Miguel Sousa to do the kerning of the typeface as Phinney finalized the outlines.
