        The John Irving rules
Oscar watch: The author of "The Cider House Rules" talks about his Academy Award nomination, abortion and his strange fixation on oral sex.
By Jeff Stark J ohn Irving's new book, "My Movie Business," explains how he wrote, rewrote and re-rewrote the script to the film version of his novel "The Cider House Rules" all over a period of a dozen years and with the involvement of no fewer than four directors. His book finally landed in the hands of Lasse Halstrvm, the Swedish filmmaker best known for "My Life as a Dog" and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." The movie that resulted ended up as one of the year's sleeper hits and earned a surprising seven Academy Award nominations, including one for best picture and another, for Irving, for best adapted screenplay. The book is an unlikely epic, following the father-son relationship of Dr. Wilbur Larch, the head of a Maine orphanage and an accomplished abortionist, and a seemingly unadoptable orphan, Homer Wells. (Larch is played by Michael Caine, nominated for best supporting actor; Homer is Tobey Maguire.) After Homer returns from his fourth foster family, Larch trains him to become a doctor, to make himself useful. But Homer eventually evinces a deep philosophical opposition to abortion; this leads to his setting off on a 15-year journey, during which he works at a New England apple orchard and falls in love with his best friend's girlfriend.

The bestselling novelist is a strong believer in good manners, a semibeliever in religion, and unequivocal in his opinions about abortion. Author John Irving always plays by the rules his own. Suzanne Herel Comments Post Comment May/June 1997 Issue E ven John Irving's mother has come to expect the lurid elements of her son's work. "Christ! Another dildo?" she exclaimed when presented with an excerpt from the writer's novel-in-progress, A Widow for One Year . "I tried to explain to her that there were differences among dildos, and that a dildo from a previous novel and a current novel are not the same," Irving said on the West Coast leg of a recent tour introducing his book (as yet without a publisher) and the upcoming film productions of The Cider House Rules and A Son of the Circus Advertisement Advertise on MotherJones.com

T H E S A L O N I N T E R V I E W J O H N I R V I N G Literature's muscle man talks about how he wrestled his writing career to the ground and why he'd like to grind critics' faces into the mat. BY JOAN SMITH it was John Irving's high-school wrestling coach, Ted Seabrooke, who told him that "talent is overrated. That you're not very talented needn't be the end of it." Seabrooke also told him: "An underdog is in a position to take a healthy bite." And Irving, who counted himself neither a born athlete nor a born writer he was dyslexic before that particular learning disability had been identified by name took Seabrooke's words as a kind of mantra. "I was an underdog," the bestselling novelist writes in "The Imaginary Girlfriend," a long, autobiographical essay in his new collection of short pieces, "Trying to Save Piggy Sneed." "Therefore, I had to control the pace of everything. This was more than I learned in English 4W, but the concept was applicable to Creative Writing and to all my schoolwork, too. If my classmates could read our history assignment in an hour, I allowed myself two or three. If I couldn't learn to spell, I would keep a list of my most frequently misspelled words and I kept the list with me; I had it handy even for unannounced quizzes. Most of all, I rewrote everything; first drafts were like the first time you tried a new takedown you needed to drill it, over and over again, before you even dreamed of trying it in a match. I began to take my lack of talent seriously."

RADFORD, Virginia - Irving John "Jack" Good, a retired Virginia Tech statistician who helped break the Nazi Enigma code for his native England during World War II, has died. He was 92. Good died Sunday, the university said. He had been a professor of statistics at Tech since 1967. A citizen of the United Kingdom, Good had worked for British military intelligence on a code-breaking team at Bletchley Park, England. He and other scientists developed an early version of the computer to break one of the German encryption systems. He later went on to pioneer developments in an approach to statistics known as Bayesian inference, in which new information is used to update the probabilities of future outcomes. Good also advised Stanley Kubrick on the science related to the film "2001: A Space Odyssey."

A Widow for One Year
by John Irving
Random House, $27.95
Review by Jim Argendeli
(CNN) Alright, I admit it. I am not ashamed of what I have become. I may have occasional feelings of guilt, but they are fleeting once I became captured in the story John Irving weaves in his new tapestry "A Widow For One Year". The author of the must-read novel of the late 70s and 80s "The World According To Garp" has written what might be the must-read novel of the late 90s. In his tenth book, Irving divides his novel into three sections, starting in the Hamptons during the summer of 1958. There we are introduced to 4-year-old Ruth Cole, who wakes during the night to what she thinks is the sound of her 38-year-old mother Marion throwing up. When Ruth goes to investigate, she interrupts mom's sexual liaison with 16-year-old lover Edward O' Hare. Irving lures us into his story by revealing how Ruth's parents, Ted and Marion, are separated but living in neighboring houses. The disintegration of the Cole's marriage was sparked by the tragic death of their two teen-age sons five years earlier. Into this dysfunctional non-family arrives Marion's young lover. Edward is hired to be a writer's assistant for Ted, who is a best-selling children's author. Edward's main official duty is to chauffeur Ted, who enjoys his drinking along with seducing lonely housewives.
