shop mailing lists search: home film theatre classical ... features / reviews: festivals gigs albums James @ Brixton Academy, London, 8 November 2000 James at Brixton Academy in 1989 was one of the first gigs I ever went to. I have loved them ever since and I am told that when I try and "make some shapes" I dance like Tim Booth with a generous spattering of Bez, excellent when you are a lean, lithe star but appalling when you are a 15 stone drunk with very little rhythm. Brixton Academy is the finest live music venue in the known universe and I have neglected it of late. Both Tim and I agree it is wonderful to be back. In the beginning, pre Sit Down, James were a cheeky four piece with three albums of fantastically crafted songs championed by Morrissey as "the best band in the world". Despite limited commercial success their live shows had a large and loyal following. One Man Clapping, a self-financed live album released by the band after they were dropped by Sire, remains a much sought-after classic. James also produced simple but highly prized t-shirts which were readily snapped up by people who, although they had never heard Come Home, were quite prepared to have it emblazoned on their chest, back or sleeve. There was a time when the band survived on t-shirt sales topped up with the income from being human guinea pigs at a new drug testing centre. The release of Sit Down caught James by surprise and changed all that. They now have double platinum albums and American success. Tonight they start with four new songs. "Stick with us," asks Tim, but he needn't worry. They are superbly received and form a brilliant preparation for the first of the rabble-rousers, Say Something, which gets a huge reception as does the highly appropriate deluge Sometimes, followed by Tomorrow. James then wheel out more new material, swirling orchestral arrangements, "the difficult ones" that end with "Pleased to meet you" tritely delivered by Tim shaking hands with practically everyone who wants to.

    WILLIAM JAMES
"My philosophy is what I call a radical empiricism, a pluralism, a 'tychism,' which represents order as being gradually won and always in the making. It is theistic, but not essentially so. It rejects all doctrines of the Absolute. It is finitist; but it does not attribute to the question of the Infinite the great methodological importance (Pillon) and Renouvier attribute to it. I fear that you may find my system too bottomless and romantic. I am sure that, be it in the end judged true or false, it is essential to the evolution of clearness in philosophical thought that someone should defend a pluralistic empiricism radically."

    James, P.D.,
byname of PHYLLIS DOROTHY JAMES, BARONESS JAMES, married name WHITE (b. Aug. 3, 1920, Oxford, Oxfordshire, Eng.), British mystery novelist best known for her fictional detective Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard. The daughter of a middle-grade civil servant, James grew up in the university town of Cambridge. Her formal education, however, ended at age 16 because of lack of funds, and she was thereafter self-educated. In 1941 she married a medical student and future physician, who came home from wartime service mentally deranged and spent much of the rest of his life in psychiatric hospitals. To support her family (which included two children), she took work in hospital administration and, after her husband's death in 1964, became a civil servant in the criminal section of the Department of Home Affairs. Her first mystery novel, Cover Her Face, appeared in 1962 and was followed by six more mysteries before she retired from government service in 1979 to devote full time to writing. A number of her stories were turned into television plays. She was named a life peer in 1991. James's master detective, Dalgliesh, who rises in her novels from chief inspector to chief superintendant and then to commander, is a serious, introspective person, moralistic yet realistic. The novels in which he appears are peopled by fully rounded characters, civilized, genteel, and motivated.

I am researching several family lines, I guess the first one being the BYINGTON family (NATHANIEL BYINGTON b. 1781); (I call him Sr. since I've come across so many) from Weybridge, Vermont dating back to about 1812 from land records that I have found.
Lately, however, I've been "hot on the trail" of my maternal line which includes the families of THOMAS(b. abt 1844) & BRIDGET(b. abt. 1846) BREW MOONEY. Thomas was born in Canada and Bridget is listed as coming from Ireland. Four daughters were born to them (MARY ANN b. 1/6/1867; AGNES b. 8/14/1868; MARGARET b. 3/6/1870; and THERESA b. 7/1/1872). Both parents died at a rather young age and the sisters were separated; Mary Ann possibly to Pittsburgh, PA to live with MARGARET BREW BUNCH; Agnes was taken in by the THOMAS CAROLAN family in Ontario; Margaret went to Ashtabula Cty., Ohio to be raised by her uncle, MICHAEL BREW with the help of his mother, MARY HIGGINS BREW; and Theresa was placed in a foundling home as a baby but unclear as to its whereabouts. Theresa lived in the Ashtabula area and I believe first married a Mr. FREEMAN in 1895 and then later to ISAAC SHIPMAN about 1909.

Hello, Thanks for taking the time to visit my web page. I recently entered the world of Genealogical Research. I am looking for info on the James/Scurlock and Johnson /Mays family from Houston County, TX about 1860. I have traced these African American families back to about 1860 when the information started to get harder to come by. I would appreciate any info you may have and would share info that I have found. I look forward to hearing from you.
