Randall Jarrell was born in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1914. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Vanderbilt University. From 1937 to 1939 he taught at Kenyon College, where he met John Crowe Ransom and Robert Lowell , and then at the University of Texas. His first book of poems, Blood for a Stranger , was published in 1942, the same year he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He soon left the Air Corps for the army and worked as a control tower operator, an experience which provided much material for his poetry. Jarrell's reputation as a poet was established in 1945, while he was still serving in the army, with the publication of his second book, Little Friend, Little Friend , which bitterly and dramatically documents the intense fears and moral struggles of young soldiers. Other volumes followed, all characterized by great technical skill, empathy with the lives of others, and an almost painful sensitivity. Following the war, Jarrell accepted a teaching position at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and remained there, except for occasional absences to teach elsewhere, until his death. Even more than for his poems, Jarrell is highly regarded as a peerless literary essayist, and was considered the most astute (and most feared) poetry critic of his generation. Randall Jarrell was struck by a car and killed at the age of 51 in 1965, in a death that may or may not have been a suicide.

sweet magic
This book has been a favorite in my family for generations. It is short (you can read it in an afternoon easily ) and the writing is simple and straigtforward but also sweet and magical. The author's introductory note captures my heart: "say what you like, but such things do happen. Not often, but they do happen".
Perfection
This is a beautiful, timeless story, told in gorgeous prose, and charmingly decorated. I'm not the sort of person who gushes over books, but this one is true literary perfection, and not just for children. It's the kind of book that, no matter how old you are when you first read it, will stay with you for the rest of your life. for more information click here the animal family review I first read this book when I was in the third grade, and could not find it in the public library, but was so excited to have found it here; it's just as I remembered it. Love this book! for more information click here Reads like a poem My daughter's third grade teacher read this book aloud, and my daughter asked permission to bring it home to read to me - the first time she has ever done that. The kid has taste. This quickly became one of my all-time favorite children's books, although I hesitate to put it into such a narrow category. It's a beautiful, simply told story that gets me every time. My son just turned 13, and every birthday we tell stories about what life was like when the kids were born. I find myself going back to this story - "we had you always."

A key figure in the development of Modernist American poetry, Jarrell's poetry walks a fine line between the deeply symbolic Imagism of poets such as T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound , and the formal rigor and traditionalism of Robert Frost . Like Frost, Jarrell was a master of strict meter and rhyme, and his poems are praised as some of the most technically masterful in the history of American verse. His subjects, however—war, depression, and anecdotes drawn from his own autobiography—were strikingly modern and realistic. Jarrell is often considered one of the most under appreciated poets of the early twentieth century; although he corresponded closely with a number of other leading poets from both Britain and America, and although his colleagues generally revered his work, Jarrell was writing in the shadows of literary giants, and it is only within recent years that his poetry has been given the serious critical appraisal that it deserves. In part, Jarrell's significant talents as a poet may have gone unnoticed, ironically, because of his even greater talents in another literary genre: Criticism. Jarrell is unanimously believed to be the most astute and influential critic of the early twentieth century. It was largely thanks to Jarrell's critical essays on
