Alfred Jarry Alfred Jarry, known primarily for his Ubu plays, began writing in 1888 at the age of fifteen with two fellow pupils at the Rennes lycee . Their project, a comic satire of their physics teacher, Monsieur Hebert, was nothing more than a childish prank. Eventually, however, this "piece alquemique" would become the world's first absurdist drama. The first and most famous of Alfred Jarry's Ubu plays is Ubu Roi or Ubu Rex . This strange parody of Shakespeare's Macbeth let loose upon the world the grotesque figure of Pa Ubu, a foul old man set on conquering Poland by any means necessaryand a personification of all that is base and stupid in mankind. The play premiered at the Theatre de L'OEuvre on December 10, 1896 to mixed results from an angry and violent crowd. Some audience members were outraged. Others were intrigued. But no one had ever seen anything like this before. The next day, the debate raged on in the papers and the cafes. In 1898

Best known for his play Ubu Roi (1896), which is often cited as a forerunner to the surrealist theatre of the 1920s and 1930s, Jarry wrote in a variety of genres and styles. He wrote plays, novels, poetry, essays and speculative journalism. His texts present some pioneering work in the field of absurdist literature. Sometimes grotesque or misunderstood (e.g. the opening line in his play Ubu Roi , "Merdre!", has been translated into English as "Pshit!", "Shitteth!", "Shittr!", "Shikt!", "Shrit!", "Pschitt!", and "Shitsky!"), he invented a

    by Alfred Jarry from Gallimard
A re-issue of three plays that ushered in the great age of absurdist theatre
There was a riot at the first performance of Ubu Roi on 10 December 1896, when Firmin Gemier, playing Ubu, strode to the footlights and roared: "Merde!" at the audience, and theatre would never be the same again. Ubu became a force to be reckoned with in literature, art and politics. Jarry wrote more exploits for him and took to acting the role of Ubu himself in his own brief, strange life.
This volume contains lively modern translations by Cyril Connolly and Simon Watson Taylor of Ubu Roi, Ubu Cocu and Ubu Enchaîné as well as Jarry's writings on theatre.

    Biographie

The Supermale List Price: Price: You Save:
    Description
Fiction. "The act of love is of no importance, since it can be performed indefinitely." With that remark, the gentleman adventurer Andre Marcueil sets into motion an outrageous plot of scientific experiments and technological heroism focused on author Alfred Jarry's trinity of obsessions: sex, alcohol, and bicycles. Like a mock Jules Verne, Jarry describes the manner in which the "Supermale" ultimately proves his claim; after 82 times with a woman, attending doctors hook him up to a machine instead, with whom he merges in the book'sand the Supermale'sfinal climax. This 1902 novel is, together with EXPLOITS AND OPINIONS OF DOCTOR FAUSTROLL, PATAPHYSICIAN (1898), one of the pillars of Pataphysics, Jarry's "science of imaginary solutions." Translated from French by Ralph Gladstone and Barbara Wright.
    Customer Reviews
Unreal If the Marquis de Sade, having abandoned his steadygoing Cartesianism for the monistic mechanicism of Spinoza, had decided to interpolate 'Philosophy in the Boudoir' with passages from 'Around the World in 80 Days', you would get something rather similar to this outstanding novel. Like all of Jarry's books, it's an inexhaustible dynamo. If you love Raymond Roussel and Marcel Duchamp, this is the novel for you.
