26. Robinson Jeffers' Life And Career
Arthur B. Coffin. JEFFERS was born John Robinson Jeffers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of the Reverend Dr. William Hamilton Jeffers and Annie Robinson Tuttle.
http://www.english.illinois.edu/maps/poets/g_l/jeffers/life.htm
Robinson Jeffers' Life and Career Arthur B. Coffin JEFFERS Jeffers met Una Call Kuster in 1906; she was three years older than he and married to a prominent Los Angeles attorney. In each other, Jeffers and Kuster found intellectual and emotional stimulation and compatibility that drew them powerfully together. At length, Kuster obtained a divorce and married Jeffers in August 1913. A year later the couple moved to Carmel, where, except for occasional trips to Europe and New Mexico, they spent the rest of their lives. In 1916 they became the parents of twin sons (a daughter born earlier did not survive infancy), and Jeffers began to build a stone cottage for his family. Later he added the famous forty-foot stone tower, the emblem of "Tor House" (as they called their home). Both structuresthe house and the tower overlooking Carmel Bay and facing Point Lobosfigured significantly in Jeffers's life and poetry. As an undergraduate and graduate student Jeffers had regularly contributed poems to various student publications. By 1911 he had written a number of generic love poems to Kuster and other women, and in 1912 he privately published some of these and other works in Flagons and Apples

Not "to open up new fields of poetry, but only to reclaim old freedom." - RJ
Compared to Whitman for his long and melodic lines, Jeffers is influenced by his study of classical literature and by the deterministic doctrines of late nineteenth-century science. He is critical of American capitalism as morally bankrupt and defacing the landscape. His doctrine of Inhumanism - "a shifting of emphasis from man to not-man; the rejection of human solipsism and recognition of the transhuman magnificence" - makes humans to become "uncentered" from themselves. He wrote: "This manner of thought and feeling is neither misanthropic nor pessimistic ... it has objective truth and human value." Primary Works Poetry Flagons and Apples . Los Angeles: Grafton, 1912.

    Jeffers, Robinson
Jeffers, Robinson, , American poet and dramatist, b. Pittsburgh, grad. Occidental College, 1905. From 1914 until his death Jeffers lived on the Big Sur section of the rocky California coast, finding his inspiration in its stern beauty. For Jeffers the world, viewed pantheistically, was marred only by humanity, a doomed and inverted species, and its tainted civilization. He frequently used Greek myth to illustrate humankind's tortured mind, its diseased introspection, and its alienation from nature. Jeffers' poetry is virile, intense, and rich in elemental power, with dense clusters of words and sweeping rhythms. Among his volumes of poetry are Tamar and Other Poems Roan Stallion The Woman at Point Sur Cawdor Dear Judas Give Your Heart to the Hawks Such Counsels You Gave to Me (1948), and
