Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson wished to be remembered for three achievements in his public life. He had served as governor of Virginia, as U.S. minister to France, as secretary of state under George Washington , as vice-president in the administration of John Adams, and as president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. On his tombstone, however, which he designed and for which he wrote the inscription, there is no mention of these offices. Rather, it reads that Thomas Jefferson was "author of the Declaration of American Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia" and, as he requested, "not a word more." Historians might want to add other accomplishmentsfor example, his distinction as an architect, naturalist, and linguistbut in the main they would concur with his own assessment.
Early Life
Jefferson was born at Shadwell in what is now Albemarle County, Va., on Apr. 13, 1743. He treated his pedigree lightly, but his mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, came from one of the first families of Virginia; his father, Peter Jefferson, was a well-to-do landowner, although not in the class of the wealthiest planters. Jefferson attended (1760-62) the College of William and Mary and then studied law with George WYTHE. In 1769 he began six years of service as a representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses. The following year he began building Monticello on land inherited from his father. The mansion, which he designed in every detail, took years to complete, but part of it was ready for occupancy when he married Martha Wayles Skelton on Jan. 1, 1772. They had six children, two of whom survived into adulthood:

Jump to: navigation search Jefferson, Thomas (1743-1826): American Revolutionary, Third President of the United States. Thomas Jefferson was born in Virginia in 1743 and died on July 4, 1826, the same day as Adams, John , his life long associate and friend. Their relationship illustrates the dichotomy that was Thomas Jefferson. He was the author of the Declaration of Independence, a Secretary of State, an envoy to France, the third president of the United States, a founder of the Democratic-Republican party, the anti-federalists party. During his early life, he was fortunate to have an excellent family library that contributed to his intellectual and political development. He referred to the “vestal flame” of the forum to support the Whigism espoused by Coke, whose works became fare for his legal education. Jefferson did not approved of Tory Mansfieldism professed by Blackstone, William , a distinction he applied to the later struggle of Federalist versus Anti-Federalist party conflict. Jefferson’s early penchant for Whigism led to his distrust of a strong central government and a political inclination for the rights of the individual. Thomas Jefferson
First Inaugural Address
In the Washington, D.C.
Wednesday, March 4, 1801
Chief Justice John Marshall administered the first executive oath of office ever taken in the new federal city in the new Senate Chamber (now the Old Supreme Court Chamber) of the partially built Capitol building. The outcome of the election of 1800 had been in doubt until late February because Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, the two leading candidates, each had received 73 electoral votes. Consequently, the House of Representatives met in a special session to resolve the impasse, pursuant to the terms spelled out in the Constitution. After 30 hours of debate and balloting, Mr. Jefferson emerged as the President and Mr. Burr the Vice President. President John Adams, who had run unsuccessfully for a second term, left Washington on the day of the inauguration without attending the ceremony.

Biography
American statesman and U.S. President 1801-1809, an outstanding statesman and man of letters noted for his contributions to many legal and historical government documents. An idealist, he was rigid and doctrinaire, but also complex and contradictory. A racist, he had a slave mistress who bore him many children. Historians are fascinated but often repelled by his humorless self-righteousness. DNA tests taken in 1998 confirmed that Jefferson fathered at least one, if not all six of the children born to his slave, Sally Hemings. Jefferson died 7/04/1826, Monticello, VA.
