Next only to William Shakespeare , Samuel Johnson is perhaps the most quoted of English writers. The latter part of the eighteenth century is often (in English-speaking countries, of course) called, simply, the Age of Johnson. Johnson was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England, in 1709. His mother did not have enough milk for him, and so he was put out to nurse. From his nurse he contracted a tubercular infection called scrofula, which inflamed the lymph glands and spread to the optic and auditory nerves, leaving him deaf in the left ear, almost blind in the left eye, and dim of vision in the right eye. It also left scar tissue which disfigured his face, as did a later childhood bout with small-pox. Young Johnson responded to his disabilities by a fierce determination to be independent and to accept help and pity from no one. When he was three or four years old, a household servant regularly took him to school and walked him home again. One day the servant was not there in time, and Johnson started for home by himself. Coming to an open ditch across the street, he got down on all fours to peer at it before attempting to cross. His teacher had followed to watch him, and now approached to help. He spied her, and angrily pushed her away. Throughout his life, he feared that ill health would tempt him to self-indulgence and self-pity, and bent over backwards to resist the temptation. He had an uncle who was a local boxing champion, and who taught him to fight, so that years later he walked without fear in the worst sections of London. Once four robbers attacked him, and he held his own until the watch arrived and arrested them.

Biography
British writer of letter's, essays, reviews, lexicographer and known as England's greatest man of letters. Noted for a stupendous intellect, energy and passion, Johnson suffered through early poverty and received fame and notoriety by mid-life. After his father died in 1731, he organized a school in Litchfield and married Mrs. Elisabeth Porter, 20 years his senior. The school failed and he moved to London in 1737 becoming a hack writer for "Gentleman's Magazine." With the publication of "The Vanity of Human Wishes" he became a noted poet and in 1764, he and Sir Joshua Reynolds founded the Literary Club. Johnson published his "Dictionary" after nine years of work and effort in 1755. Dublin University granted an honorary doctorate to Johnson in 1765 and he received one from Oxford in 1775. His first wife died in 1752 and he established a close friendship with Mrs. Hester Thrale from 1765, who helped write his memoirs. Johnson died of renal disease, 12/13/1784 London, England.

Samuel Johnson circa 1772, painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Samuel Johnson, LL.D. (September 7, 1709 – December 13, 1784), often referred to simply as Dr. Johnson , was an English poet, essayist, lexicographer, biographer, and iconic literary critic. Although his literary output is relatively meager—he wrote only one novel, one play, and only a small volume of poems—his intellectual breadth and contributions as a public man of letters were so imposing that the late eighteenth century is often termed the Age of Johnson. Johnson, more than any other author in English up to his time, became a public figure of tremendous fame and influence; he was perhaps the first author-celebrity in the English-speaking world. His influence on the opinions not only of his fellow writers but on every intellectual in England and the colonies was perhaps only equaled a century later by Coleridge Johnson's hatred of slavery and the abuses of colonialism, his moral framework and notable acts of private charity, influenced later ethical novelists such as Jane Austen Charles Dickens and George Eliot . Scholar H. W. Donner has said that no critic since Aristotle "carried more weight" than Johnson; and Christian thinker and novelist
