NEWS and NEW ON SITE
(16th September, 2010)
GOOD NEWS
THANK YOU FROM DIANA
(7th August 2010) Diana says thank you to everyone who has sent her good wishes (see next notice). She has stopped the chemo- and radiotherapy because it made her feel so ill, so she is not well enough to respond to individual questions. But she says it is very nice of everyone to send such messages. IMPORTANT NOTICE (March 2010) I am sorry to have to report that Diana is not at all well at the moment. She has been suffering from cancer and because of her illness, she is not able to read emails right now and she is not able to reply to letters and queries. If you would like to send a good wish, you can email via me (Meredith) and I will print out the messages (no questions, please)

Welcome!
Welcome to Chrestomanci Castle, a fan site for Diana Wynne Jones. If you are new to Diana Wynne Jones (perhaps you were introduced to her work through the Miyazaki film Howl's Moving Castle Movie / Hauru no Ugoku Shiro ?), come in, have a look around. Learn more about her books , contribute to the wiki , or join the mailing list Imaginary Letters "Dear Deborah," asks my imaginary letter-writer. "Why is this site both Chrestomanci Castle and Travels in the Land of Ingary? And why do you occasionally call Kingsbury 'Kingsport'?" Well, imaginary letter writer, let me explain. Back in the old days, when puppies were the oldest animals, we didn't have these fancy things called "web design" and "standards for content". This was back in 1995, and basically, we just spewed whatever the heck we wanted onto pages. Let's face it, back then, nobody was online but geeks, students, and AOL-users, so nobody with any standards for quality. But now we seem to be coming up to our tenth anniversary ! Oh my goodness. Let's see if I can bring this page into the 21st century, eh what?

6. Diana Wynne Jones
Brief description of each of her series.
http://www.angelfire.com/ca2/ladyailanna/djones.html
Diana Wynne Jones
Diana Wynne Jones is an extraordinarily clever British writer who thoroughly trumps J. K. Rowling in world-building, plot, characters and language. Her books are usually wildly funny in an understated, dry way, and the plots are sometimes so dizzying it takes a few days of hard thinking just to figure them out entirely. It is, however, always worth it to do so. This is not a complete listing of her books, as she is quite prolific. HEXWOOD No one is as they seem in this intricate, dizzying sci-fi tale (with Arthurian myths). Not even the protagonist can quite figure out what's going on, or who she is. What IS going on? And what's distorting reality? THE CHRESTOMANCI SERIES This is a loose series of books with only the powerful enchanter Chrestomanci to link them. Strange things happen feuding families, matches, magic, alternate worlds, frogs, witch-burning... In no particular order, they are: Charmed Life, The Lives of Christopher Chant, Witch Week and The Magicians of Caprona. FIRE AND HEMLOCK This is one of the more confusing ones (up there with Hexwood), and retells in a very surprising way the legend of Tam Lin.

Jones was born in London on 16 August 1934, the daughter of Marjorie (née Jackson) and Richard Aneurin Jones, both of whom were educators. When war was announced, shortly after her fifth birthday, she was evacuated to Wales , and thereafter moved several times, including periods in Coniston Water York , and back in London . In 1943 her family finally settled in Thaxted Essex , where her parents worked running an educational conference centre. There, Jones and her two younger sisters Isobel (later Professor Isobel Armstrong , the literary critic) and Ursula spent a neglected childhood in which they were left chiefly to their own devices. After attending the

Diana Wynne Jones
If you love fantasy, Jones is a can't-miss author. Her magical books begin with vivid description and mix in a little romance, humor, mythology, with a clever twist or three. Though billed as a primarily young adult author, all ages can appreciate the books listed here. Her two latest books were directed toward adults. Readers will notice that she lives in England and writes in English (meaning, some British terms and attitudes are apparent but never detract from your enjoyment of the writing.) If you decide you want to buy several of her books at once, it's simple and efficient to use this link. Deep Secret As usual, Jones has outdone herself. With humor, finesse and intensity, this adult fantasy follows Rupert Venables, Junior Magid of Earth (yes, that's a type of magician.) His troubles begin when his Senior dies and, of course, he must take over. This means that he must search for a new Junior Magid to fill his former position, and with some help from the Powers That Be, his Senior gives him a list of possible successors- and also manages to get permission to tag along in ghost form. The five candidates are caused to attend a Scifi and Fantasy convention in England so he can meet up with them there and assess their possibilities as magicians. They will have a very important job of helping the Universe along in a positive (Ayewards) direction. Earth seems to go Naywards (negatively) a lot though, as we all know... and so do Rupert's plans.

Charmed Life
(Greenwillow, 1977)
Everyone knows Gwendolen Chant is destined to be a great witch. Her brother Eric, who goes by the nickname Cat, is a nice enough lad, but has no magical potential at all. After their parents drown in a boating accident, Gwendolen and Cat are taken in by a neighbor, Mrs. Sharp, a certified witch. Mrs. Sharp is determined that Gwendolen should have lessons in magic and witchcraft, and sends her to Henry Nostrum, a neighboring necromancer. But among their parents' effects are some letters signed "Chrestomanci," and this signature seems to impress Mrs. Sharp and Mr. Nostrum. Gwendolen writes to Chrestomanci whoever he is and before they know it, Gwendolen and Cat are on their way to Chrestomanci Castle to learn witchcraft from a master. At first, Gwendolen is delighted. Finally, her talents are to be recognized, and she will step into her rightful place in the world. Cat and Gwendolen are given beautiful, private rooms and are treated well, but Gwendolen's expectations are dashed immediately when she finds that she will be treated like any other young student of magic. Gwendolen displays her disapproval flagrantly, flamboyantly and frequently, and each time, the relative lack of response from Chrestomanci provokes her further. Finally, she pulls a final trick with repercussions across worlds. All this time, Cat is watching and worrying, desperately unhappy and homesick for Mrs. Sharp and his old life. In spite of his having no magical talent, magical things start happening around him, until Cat finally learns the truth about himself, Gwendolen and Chrestomanci and his cousin, Christopher Chant.

Description
Aidan Cain has had the worst week of his life. His gran died, he was sent to a foster home, and now malicious beings are stalking him. There is one person Gran told Aidan to go to if he ever got into trouble—a powerful sorcerer who lives at Melstone House. But when Aidan arrives on the doorstep, he finds that the sorcerer's grandson, Andrew, has inherited the house. The good news is that Aidan can tell immediately that Andrew's brimming with magic, too—and so is everyone else at Melstone. The bad news is that Andrew doesn't remember anything his grandfather taught him. Chaos is swiftly rising, and he has no idea how to control it. A sinister neighbor is stealing power from the land, magic is leaking between realms . . . and it's only a matter of time before the Stalkers find Aidan.

Diana Wynne Jones: The Dark Lord of Derkholm
The Dark Lord of Derkholm.
