JONES, JAMES ROBERT (1939- )
Born in Muskogee , Oklahoma, on May 5, 1939, James Robert Jones was the youngest child of Robert P. and Margaret Wich Jones. At age eight he was "hooked" on politics after he visited the offices of the county attorney, Ed Edmondson. By age twelve Jones stumped the district when Edmondson campaigned for the U.S. Congress and in 1958 served as J. Howard Edmondson's press secretary during his gubernatorial campaign. Although only a teenager, Jones understood the workings of the press because of his several years' employment as a reporter for Muskogee newspapers. Graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1961 with a degree in journalism and government, Jones became U.S. Rep. Ed Edmondson's administrative assistant and attained a law degree at Georgetown University in 1964. That year he served as a captain in the U.S. Army counterintelligence and as a special military aide to Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson. Leaving the military in 1965, he became an assistant to Johnson's appointments secretary and became the appointments secretary in 1968. That year the United States Jaycees named Jones as one of the "Ten Outstanding Young Men of America." As an insider in the Johnson administration, Jones learned much about politics.

Audio Interview with James Jones
James Jones, author of From Here to Eternity, The Thin Red Line , and WWII , talks with Don Swaim about his experiences in the second world war and the books he wrote about the war. He writes about the evolution of a soldier from listening to a drill sergeant to the first experience of combat. He says the best soldiers saw themselves as dead men. At first, James Jones felt military life was like a school vacation, but that feeling didn't last long. Jones saw the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and later fought in the long battle of Guadalcanal. James Jones talks about being wounded in war and how the respect of other soldiers meant so much to him and other soldiers. Jones discusses the effects of social class in warfare, and shares his thoughts about the similarities and differences in the American and Japanese soldiers in this 1975 interview. James Earl Jones Gets Morgan Freeman's Seal Of Approval
JAMES EARL JONES was given the seal of approval by MORGAN FREEMAN to star in a Broadway version of 'Driving Miss Daisy', reports the Associated Press. 73-year-old Freeman starred in the 1989 Oscar winning film version of the play, but told the original playwright that Jones was capable of playing his role in the new production. ALFRED UHRY, the writer of 'Driving Miss Daisy', says he spoke to Freeman about potential actors who could play his character, 'Hoke Colburn', in a new stage version, saying, "As good as Morgan was, the part wasn't written for him. The part was pretty much based on an actual person so it's not Morgan's part. I asked Morgan a year and a half ago, I said, 'What do you think?' He thought a minute, then he said, 'Jimmy can do it". Speaking about James' role in the new production, which opened in New York last night (25th October 2010), Uhry said, "He gets the music in his ears and in his mouth. And Vanessa (Redgrave) is getting more and more Georgia by the day"
