Like June…
By Mark Anthony Neal
SeeingBlack.com Music Critic Talk about June Jordan! Click here
"And I got to thinking about the moral meaning of memory… [A]nd what it means to forget, what it means to fail to find and preserve the connections with the dead whose lives you, or I, want or need to honor with our own."
New this month: Some of Us Did Not Die: Selected Essays of June Jordan . (Click to purchase.) Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, Jordan was given a 40% prognosis of surviving more than five years but she lived for more than a decade. While she had been a tireless advocate for the voiceless, the nameless, the faceless, and the despised for more than 30 years, she also, with her diagnosis, became an advocate for other women afflicted with the disease. The author of 28 books of poetry, fiction, and social criticism, Jordan was one of the most prolific intellectuals of her generation. But I am sure there are many, of all races, who perused newspaper accounts of her death, with no knowledge of who this woman was… is. In a society that believes that inane dictums embraced by American youth like "Be Like Mike" or "I Am Tiger Woods" are evidence of a color-blind, classless, genderless, and discrimination-free America, June Jordan worked as an activist tirelessly in the very trenches that Nike, Gatorade, McDonalds, Viacom and two national political parties claim in the name of commercial products and pop slogans. We are unlikely to hear any slogans in mainstream media… ever… that proclaim we should "Be Like June."

JORDAN - June 17 - King's Supporters Win Majority In Poll.
The parliamentary elections are held in the kingdom, with tribal independents and pro-government candidates taking a majority of 62 of the 110 seats. Islamists win 22% of the vote. (This is the first general election since King Abdullah King Abdullah can refer to:
  • Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, regent of Saudi Arabia since 1995 and king since 2005.
  • Abdullah II, king of Jordan since 1999
ascended the throne in 1999). The election leaves parliament firmly under the control of King Abdullah's supporters. Information Minister Mohammad Adwan told Jordan Television: "We're happy with a turnout of over 59%. It puts us on a par with the levels of western democracies". The elections will result in the restoration of a parliament King Abdullah dissolved in June 2001 and end two years of rule by decree Rule by decree is a style of governance allowing quick, unchallenged creation of law by a single person or group, and is used primarily by dictators and absolute monarchs, although philosophers such as Giorgio Agamben have pointed out how it has been generalized since World War I

Before I get on to the ‘poem’ in question let me give you a brief taste of some of the utter drivel this woman foisted upon the world in her 6+ decades. This stanza is from

June 10th / 11th Severn Valley All British Championship (Brookthorpe) Well, it was the hottest weekend this year so far. Very hard race conditions, but Jordan once again had a great weekend. He had Two holeshots and two very near holeshots and finished 6th overal. The 40 strong gate was full of top National riders so this was a massive result. Well done Jordan and happy birthday for this Friday, 10 years old! June 24th / 25th Torrington BSMA Best of British Championship Round 3 Saturday, qualifying went wrong! Jordan fell off, then I had to stop him to give advice, he then went out and somehow the sprocket guard twisted and got in the way of the gear lever. So after only completing two laps instead of Six Jordan qualified 23rd. Race 1, it became apparant Jorday was struggling to ride the track well enough to make good progress after a poor start, he finnished 17th. Race 2 was better, he had a good start and was in eith place for a short time, he raced hard but could only manage 14th place. Sunday, Jordan looked fast in practice, but said the bike was not reving well, so we changed bikes for the first race. It did not go as well as practice and he finnished 16th.
