Ernst Jünger March 29, 1895 - February 17, 1998 The official statement that accompanied the issue of the commemorative stamp above had this to say about Ernst Jünger The literary works of Ernst Jünger span the twentieth century, beginning with "In Stahlgewittern" (Storms of Steel) (1920), which does not glorify war but describes it in a sober fashion, and ending with "Siebzig verweht V" (1997). He, the observer, explained and made analyses of this century in diaries, essays, stories, novels, observations of nature and travel reports. Ernst Jünger remained a loner all his life, a worldly hermit of relentless integrity who refused to subject himself to contemporary trends. "I do not contradict myself", he said when asked about the alleged stylistic inconsistencies in his works which he considered to be a unit. Born in Heidelberg on 29 March 1895 as the son of a chemist, Ernst Jünger, like many of his contemporaries, went to fight in the war in August 1914 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1918, the highest Prussian military distinction for bravery in action whose last knight he was. His experience of war became an important experience for him, testing him to the limits. Distance is the term which most aptly describes Jünger's personal stance vis-à-vis the Nazi regime. He turned down the call to the German Academy of Poetry in November 1933 and warned against the dictatorship with his novel "Auf den Marmorklippen" (On the Marble Cliffs) (1939). For one, as most people know, not one crew member of the Andrea Gail, Equally arch are the personal melodramas, clearly hyperbolized to humanize the film. Bad blood between Reilly's Murph and Fichtner's Sully intensifies the tension on board, but their animosity is never explained. While Murph personifies the hardship of the profession and the personal toll it takes on the family, the tear-jerking scenes with his son are heavyhanded and out of place. And as if the storm itself was not enough of an obstacle, the filmmakers inserted virtually every mishap that could plague a long-liner into one trip. (The crew catches a shark, which takes a chunk out of a crew member's leg, another goes overboard after getting caught on a line.)

In his other books Jünger mocked the democracy of the Weimar Republic, also the main target of the Nazis. On the other hand, he rejected Adolf Hitler's offers of friendship in the 1920s.

Nato nel 1895, in gioventù si era arruolato nella legione straniera, indotto dal desiderio di azione e da uno spirito di rivolta anti-borghese. Egli indicò nella guerra, proprio a causa della sua vicinanza con la morte, il movimento di massima intensità della vita. La guerra è un rito sacro nel quale si produce voluttà ed ebrezza, è la manifestazione dello spirito di una comunità, legata da un unico destino e tenuta a battesimo dal sangue, e rappresenta la fine dell' epoca borghese, che mira soltanto alla sicurezza e al benessere e pretende di eliminare la pericolosità. Ma la guerra segna la fine di quest' epoca anche in un altro senso, che Jünger precisa in opere quali La mobilitazione totale (1930) e Il lavoratore figura del guerriero . Attraverso la tecnica si pongono le basi per la costituzione di un dominio mondiale, fondato su un nuovo ordine e una nuova umanità. Secondo Jünger, l' epoca presente è uno stato di transizione verso questa nuova epoca, che sarà caratterizzata da uno stile monumentale, reso possibile da una straordinaria possibilità di mezzi. Con questi temi era consonante la propaganda nazista, sia nella versione arcaizzante, che insisteva sui legami di sangue e di suolo come fondamento del popolo e della nazione, sia nella versione modernizzante, che scorgeva nella tecnica il mezzo essenziale per assicurare la vittoria e il dominio e, a tale scopo, procedeva all' organizzazione di corpi paramilitari. Quando però, nel 1933, il Partito nazionalsocialista giunse al potere, Jünger si tenne in disparte, e solo nel dopoguerra riprenderà le tematiche precedenti, soprattutto in
