Amazon.com "It was our secret. That's all it was. Lots of people have secrets, don't they? The world runs on secrets. What kind of place would the world be without them? Our secret was harmless. It did not hurt anybody." The secret that Millicent Moody, widow of jazz great Joss Moody, refers to may have been harmless in life, but when Joss dies and the truth is exposed, it ends up affecting more people than she ever imagined. It gives nothing away to reveal right off that Millicent's late husband was, in fact, a womansomething Millie has known all along but that the Moodys' adopted son, Colman, only discovers after his father's death. Titillating as the subject matter initially seems, in Jackie Kay's capable hands Joss's gender-bending becomes almost a side issue in a novel that is, at its heart, concerned with the essential nature of love. Book Description "Supremely humane.... Kay leaves us with a broad landscape of sweet tolerance and familial love."The New York Times Book Review

    Description
"Supremely humane.... Kay leaves us with a broad landscape of sweet tolerance and familial love." The New York Times Book Review In her starkly beautiful and wholly unexpected tale, Jackie Kay delves into the most intimate workings of the human heart and mind and offers a triumphant tale of loving deception and lasting devotion. The death of legendary jazz trumpeter Joss Moody exposes an extraordinary secret, one that enrages his adopted son, Colman, leading him to collude with a tabloid journalist. Besieged by the press, his widow Millie flees to a remote Scottish village, where she seeks solace in memories of their marriage. The reminiscences of those who knew Joss Moody render a moving portrait of a shared life founded on an intricate lie, one that preserved a rare, unconditional love. "It was our secret. That's all it was. Lots of people have secrets, don't they? The world runs on secrets. What kind of place would the world be without them? Our secret was harmless. It did not hurt anybody."

    Trumpet by Jackie Kay
    Pantheon Books, 278 pages, $23.
In the hands of a less graceful writer, Jackie Kay's Trumpet would have been a polemic about gender with a dollop of race thrown in for good measure. But Kay has taken the most tabloid topic possible and produced something at once more surprising and more subtle: a rumination on the nature of love and the endurance of a family. Be warned before reading on: I can't describe Kay's success without revealing a major early plot point. In a reverse Crying Game of sorts, the death of famed jazz trumpeter Joss Moody leads to the revelation that he was a she. The forward motion of the novel is split between the reactions of two family members: Millie, the widow who knew, and Colman, the son who didn't. It is achievement enough for a first novel to capture two such dissimilar voices well. Millie's voice is contemplative and sad ("There is nothing behind or in front of me: just me and the wind and the sea"); Colman's is angry, given to casual epithet ("The children of famous people aren't allowed to be talentless, ordinary fuckwits like me"). Though their grief is shared, their voices are perfectly distinct. But rather than be content with these two, Kay adds other perspectives: old friends, the housekeeper, a funeral director, and a doctor (among others). Each voice has its particular clarity, yet every one adds to the same insistent mantra: surprise, surprise, but wasn't he quite a fella after all? This works best in a chapter titled "The Funeral Director," which is a tour de force of character, plot, and theme. It is this mortician who provides a perfect epigram: "The dead are so demanding. The dead are larger than life."

    Interview with Jackie Kay
Jackie Kay is a poet and fiction writer who grew up in Glasgow, Scotland and now lives in Manchester, U.K. Her first book of poetry was The Adoption Papers (1991), which won the Saltire and Forward prizes. She has written two other poetry collections for adults, Other Lovers (1993) and Off Colour (1998), as well as numerous collections for children. Her fiction includes Trumpet (1998), which won the Author's Club first novel award and the 1988 Guardian Fiction award, and a recent book of short stories, Why Don't You Stop Talking (2002). This interview is based on three conversations with Kay that took place in Manchester and in Raleigh, N.C from September 2001 to February 2002.
FV : What poetic traditions do you see yourself a part of? You write in your recent novel, Trumpet , about making, at least partially, your own ancestry; who are your ancestors? Kay FV : Can you say more about how jazz and blues have influenced your poetry? Kay FV : Do you ever have specific songs in mind when you write your poems, like Stevie Smith did, for instance? Kay FV : What contemporary poets form your poetic community? That is, which poets do you identify with, even if you don't personally know them?

Interview with the author of Trumpet .
    http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0499/kay/interview.html
old Type: What is Trumpet about?
Jackie Kay: A jazz trumpeter, Joss Moody, who lived his life as a man; when he died it was discovered he was a woman. The only character who knew about this is his widow, Millie. The story is told from her point of view, and their adopted son, Colman's, who didn't know. Trumpet is all about the effect that his secret has on various different characters' ordinary lives: the registrar, the drummer, the cleaner, the tabloid journalist.
BT: Whose story did you want to tell through Trumpet Joss's, Millie's or everybody who was effected by the aftermath of Moody's death and the revelation of his secret?
JK: I wanted to tell a story, the same story, from several points of view. I was interested in how a story can work like music and how one note can contain the essence of the whole. I wanted to write a novel whose structure was very close to jazz itself. So the registrar, the drummer, the cleaner all interested me because they gave the same story a different note.
I started out with two main stories thoughMillie's grief and Colman's rage. I only ever wanted to tell Joss's story through the eyes of everyone else.
