Book Description Green Henry is a vivid and absorbing representation of Gottfried Keller's ideals and philosophy, written in poetic language and a realistic style that documents the emergence of an artist and the development of a man. Partly autobiographical, the narrative recounts the experiences of the title character ("green" after the color of clothing he always wears) through confinement and ostracism at boarding school, apprenticeship with a painter in Munich, his divided affection for two women, and the acceptance of his duty toward his country and fellow citizens.
Admired by Nietzsche (who called Keller "the only living German writer") and included by Harold Bloom in The Western Canon, Green Henry is one of the undisputed masterpieces of world literature.

A Little Legend of the Dance
    Gottfied Keller
Thou virgin of Israel, again shalt thou be adorned with thy tablet and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry... Then shall the shalt rejoice in the dance and the young men and the old together. (Jeremiah 31: 4, 13) Saint Gregory relates in his tales that Musa was the dancer among the saints. She was the child of good folk, and a graceful little maiden, who diligently served the Mother of God and knew only one passion, namely, a love of dancing so uncontrollable that if the girl was not praying, then she was assuredly dancing. And she danced in every conceivable way. Musa danced with her playmates, with the children, with the young men, and even alone. She danced in her little chamber, in the great hall, in the gardens and over the meadows, and even when she approached the altar, she seemed to be dancing a delicious measure rather than walking. And on the smooth marble flags at the church door, she never forgot to try a few hasty steps. Musa found no time to wonder at all this till the dance, which lasted some time, was over, and the merry gentleman seemed to enjoy it as much as the maiden, who, for her part, might have been tripping about in Heaven. But when the music stopped, and Musa stood there panting, she began to be really afraid, and looked at the old gentleman in amazement, for he was neither out of breath nor hot and now began to speak. He introduced himself as David, the royal ancestor of Mary the Virgin, and her messenger. And he asked her whether she would like to pass an eternity of bliss in an endless dance of joy, a dance, compared with which the one they had just ended could only be called a dismal crawl.

    Keller, Gottfried

Juli in Zürich geboren.

    Gottfried Keller
    From LoveToKnow 1911
GOTTFRIED KELLER (1819-1890), German poet and novelist, was born at Zurich on the 19th of July 1819. His father, a master joiner, dying while Gottfried was young, his early education was neglected; he, however, was in 1835 apprenticed to a landscape painter, and subsequently spent two years (1840-1842) in Munich learning to paint. Interest in politics drew him into literature, and his talents were first disclosed in a volume of short poems, Gedichte (1846). This obtained him recognition from the government of his native canton , and he was in 1848 enabled to take a short course of philosophical study at the university of Heidelberg . From 1850 to 1855 he lived in Berlin , where he wrote his most important novel, Der grilne Heinrich (1851-1853; revised edition 1879-1880), remarkable for its delicate autographic portraiture and the beautiful episodes interwoven with the action. This was followed by Die Leute von Seldwyla (1856), studies of Swiss provincial life, including in Romeo and Julia auf dem Dorfe one of the most powerful short stories in the German language , and in Die drei gerechten Kammmacher
