Poor effort from Big Jim The style of this book apparently is know in the trade as "stream of consciousness", but anyone who has ever set foot in Glasgow can see it's just standard weegie punter pub patter spun out into book length and format. I had high expectations coming to this book, having won the Booker prize and generally acclaimed by the critics. But as story lines go, it's average. As a piece of English literature, it's not even on the radar screens. As a piece of Scots literature, it's been heavily watered down (sorry to disappoint the other reviewers who thought the 'dialect' - in actual fact banter - was

    9. Bold Type: The Good Times By James Kelman
A story from The Good Times.
    http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0699/kelman/sstory.html
    James Kelman:
    The Good Times
hen I got off the bus there was this star shining. It was hardly even dark yet there it was shining away. I could make out the five points like how ye drew it as a kid. Seeing it ye knew how the prehistorics picked them out and gave them names. That was the way I felt looking at it right at that very moment, except I wouldnay have known which name to give it.
But it was like this was a special night. The moonlight through the trees. Now the cloud shifting fast. Imagine taking a taxi and missing it all. That was what happened to these people with money, they were too busy rushing here and there. It was them got left behind. They never saw the space, they never got the time. My auld man was right. Money was supposed to buy ye everything but naw it didnay. It was the lack, not having it. The poor inherit the earth. That is what the bible tells ye. Wrong, says my da, it's theirs already.
I breathed the dampness from the leaves and the grass. The smell of the river was in the air. What a night! People took alcohol, got stoned, shot junk into their veins. For what? For more than this? More than what I was experiencing right at that very moment? What would it matter if I didnt see her? What would it matter if I never saw her again in my whole life? Plus if every single friend she ever had, if every one was a lover? What would it matter?
I stopped walking and bowed my head, I was smiling at a certain thought, it always made me smile. I glanced up and for a moment my face was straight but then I chuckled and shook my head. I carried on walking. But it was definitely funny how it happened. How it crept up. Not like a bolt from the blue. That is one thing it wasnt because it was gradual, a really gradual thing; and when it arrived it was all-embracing.

    James Kelman
(born 9 June 1946, in Glasgow ) is an influential writer of novels short stories plays and political essays. His novel A Disaffection was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction in 1989. Kelman won the 1994 Booker Prize with How late it was, how late and aroused something of a controversy in doing so: one of the judges, Rabbi Julia Neuberger , denounced the book as 'a disgrace' when Kelman was announced as the winner. Kelman has since said that his Booker prize win, specifically the negative publicity and attacks made as a result, made publishers more reluctant to handle his work. In 1998 Kelman was awarded the Scotland on Sunday Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award. In 2008 he won Scotland's most prestigious literary award the Saltire Society's Book of the Year award for Kieron Smith, boy

          "The Good Times"
By Todd Pruzan S it down with a James Kelman book and you'll soon be speaking, thinking and slicing onions in Scottish. His voice is that vivid, that evocative. Kelman's gift for rendering Glaswegian dialogue with an audiotaped clarity is a brilliant parlor trick, but his dialect-heavy disciples (including Irvine Welsh and the Cockney John King) overlook his greatest strength. Kelman is a master at portraying the numb headaches afflicting morose, underwhelmed people: nervous laborers ("The Busconductor Hines"), bored schoolteachers ("A Disaffection"), hopeless castoffs (the Booker Prize-winning nightmare "How late it was, how late"). His new story collection, "The Good Times," intimately documents times that are anxious, tedious, pointless anything but good. "The Good Times" isn't a collection of 20 stories so much as 20 fragments, 20 arguments, 20 brief interviews with hideous men. These aural folktales, seemingly overheard from the next table in the pub or through thin apartment walls, assume a participatory familiarity as Kelman isolates the throwaway thoughts and insignifica of our daily lives. We're conditioned to ignore our quotidian habits; Kelman stares them in the face.
