damieng's Full Review: Gerald Kersh and Paul Duncan - Karmesin: The World... Gerald Kersh
Crippen and Landru

The book contains 17 short stories and they range in length from 5 to 13 pages; just ideal to finish a single story if you have 10 minutes to spare or for settling in and reading the lot in one sitting.
Each story unfolds in much the same way. They open with Karmesin admonishing Kersh (who acts as Karmesin's disbelieving audience) for doubting his stories. At the same time he scoffs at the crimes that are committed nowadays, claiming that not only could he pull off a better burglary, blackmail or robbery but that he already has. He then proceeds to tell a tale of fantastic achievement that is hugely entertaining and brilliant in its simplicity and success. For, as Karmesin keeps reminding Kersh, he is a genius and a master-criminal.

"Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron."
Kersh was a strange mixture for a writer; part fantasy, part mystery/horror, and a large part social critic and activist. And just as strangely, Kersh was a very popular writer, with the number of books in print hampered by the paper shortage. He became a novelist in the 1930s with the publication of Men are so Ardent , 1936, and his third book, Night and the City , 1938, made him famous (becoming a movie with Richard Widmark and Gene Tierney). Another of Kersh's stories "The Extraordinarily Horrible Dummy" was filmed in 1945 as Dead of Night When WW II imposed itself, Kersh became a member of the Coldstream Guard, having both of his legs broken by a German bomb that landed nearby in a London street. Recovering, and pushing for the fight, Kersh ended up in France, seeking out and helping relatives when he could, but finding that some had been sent to concentration camps, never to be seen again. An earlier fling into wrestling served him well, as Kersh was something of a barroom brawler. He enjoyed tearing telephone books in two, opening beer bottles with his fingernails, and bending dimes with his teeth. Kirsh was also given to staying up all night drinking and playing poker, then cleaning himself up and continuing the next day without sleep.

Gerald Kersh writes refreshingly weird and strange short stories (and novels) that are hard to categorize. I've always enjoyed his short fiction. Here's hoping that you will, too.
From FantasticFiction:
"Venture into this alarmingly convincing world, meet the horse whose stubbornness changed history, or the man damned to everlasting love, or the murderer who confessed... and confessed... and confessed. Learn, too the secret of the Mona Lisa's smile, or what really happened to Ambrose Bierce. And ponder, if you can, the case of Simple Simon, who lost the only important thing he hadand never even missed it. Lean back, relax, take a long look at the world of Kersh. You may never recover."
Like all the books I assemble on MobileRead, this too was assembled to reflect human intervention and artistic judgment.

Ouvertre um Mitternacht
Originaltitel: "Prelude to a Certain Midnight" (William Heinemann: London 1947)
