Full Dark, No Stars Full Dark, No Stars
by Stephen King Under the Dome. One of the novellas is reportedly about Hemingford Home, Nebraska, which fans of The Stand know as the home of Mother Abagail! The story titles and plot synopses for Full Dark, No Stars are: 'I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...' writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up '1922', the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerising tales from Stephen King, linked by the theme of retribution. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife Arlette proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.
In 'Big Driver', a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book-club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face to face with another stranger: the one inside herself.

Biography
American prolific writer and screenwriter. A former English teacher, he accomplished the feat of writing more than 40 successful horror novels by 1999 with the first, "Carrie," published in 1974. Movies were made of 26 of his books; he wrote the screenplays for five and did bit parts in three. King's last two years' income has been $22 million and his entire product grosses more than $100 million per year. His books have sold over 100 million copies in 33 languages. His mom Nellie gave him a love of reading and encouraged him to use his imagination. An older brother, David was adopted two years before his birth, after his mother had been told she could not bear children. His dad, a merchant seaman, abandoned the family when he was still a youngster. King describes himself as a nerd who started his career on a high school paper called "The Village Vomit." His short stories sold for $35 each while he worked at a laundry making $60 per week. He was later hired to teach high school English. Just as his phone was disconnected for non-payment, he received a $2,500. advance on his first book in 1973, "Carrie," which later sold in paperback right for $400,000. In 1989, Viking signed him to a four-book contract for $38 million. King purchased WZON, a radio station in Bangor, and programmed it to run commercial-free. All of his 40 published books are still in print and is believed to have sold over 230 million copies.

Born some time before 1101, he was still a boy when he was taken into favor by his uncle, King Henry I of England. From Henry le received the honor of knighthood and the county of Mortain. In 1118 he severed his connection with Blois and Chartres, renouncing his hereditary claims in favor of his elder brother Theobald. But he acquired the county of Boulogne by marrying Matilda (c. 1103-1152), the heiress of Count Eustace III and a niece of Henry's first wife. The old king arranged this match after the untimely loss of his son, William Atheling, in the tragedy of the White Ship; until 1125 Stephen was regarded as the probable heir to the English throne. But the return of the widowed empress Matilda to her father's court changed the situation. Henry compelled Stephen and the rest of his barons to acknowledge the empress as their future ruler (1126). Seven years later these oaths were renewed; and in addition the ultimate claims of Matilda's infant son, Henry of Anjou, were recognized (1133).

KING, Stephen The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon (NY), Scribner, (1999). A novel. Signed by the author . With the bookplate of Stanley Wiater on the front pastedown; fine in a fine dust jacket. One of his scarcest trade editions to find signed, presumably because of the difficult logistics of handling a Stephen King book signing, due to his extreme popularity. This copy was a gift to attendees at a dinner celebrating King's 25th anniversary as a published writer, which Wiater attended with his wife. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted. See more items by KING, Stephen

Stephen King (1947-) American novelist and short-story writer, whose enormously popular books revived the interest in horror fiction from the 1970s. King's place in the modern horror fiction can be compared to that of J.R.R. Tolkien's who created the modern genre of fantasy. Like Anthony Trollope, Charles Dickens or Balzac in his King has expressed the fundamental concerns of his era, and used the horror genre as his own branch of artistic expression. King has underlined, that even in the world of cynicism, despair, and cruelties, it remains possible for individuals to find love and discover unexpected resources in themselves. His characters often conquer their own problems and malevolent powers that would suppress or destroy them. "I wish I could get away from horror for a while, and I do - or I think I do, and then suddenly I discover that I'm like the guy in the poem by Auden who runs and runs and finally ends up in a cheap, one-night hotel. He goes down a hallway and opens a door, and there he meets himself sitting under a naked light bulb, writing." (King in Faces of Fear by Douglas E. Winter, 1990)

An affable, mild-mannered and handsome young man, he incited Henry's favour, who knighted him after the Battle of Tinchebrai. Matilda, who was Henry I's only surviving legitimate child, had been named her father's heir and prior to his death, the barons had sworn an oath of fealty to her as such. Stephen was among those who had sworn fealty to his cousin.
    Stephen's Reign
Matilda was in France at the time of her father Henry I's death and in her absence Stephen promptly seized the throne for himself. The barons, disliking the idea of having a woman ruling over them, accepted the status quo and Stephen was duly crowned King of England on 22nd December, 1135. King Stephen was altogether of a different character than was usual in his family. The very antithesis of his uncle
